The different branch- es of sport have been hard hit as the athletes took up far more danger- ous gttmes but just as they performed in baseball, football, hockey and the other games they have again taken s. starring role over the battle- fields of Europe. 1 Locally the sports scene has changed greatly. True the different branches are still carrying on gamely but tiie call to arms has been answered so strongly here in this little Island province that practically nil tiie familiar faces that dotted the playing fields are now far removed from our midst. This year thLs some driving club have already made their lans and it. is expected that the irst meet of the season will take place there tomorrow. Figure Skating 'Ii1e Figure Skating class that was conducted by Wallie Seamle- bury had a. great season that wound u with the presenting of the Char otietown Ice Follies late in March. This branch of winter pastime has been going on for several seasons but this season was by far the best with the presents- tion of tiie Follies being witnessed‘ by over 1.000 people. The caste put on a great show and this year Inns are beln mode to have it iggey and bet er. Great improve- ment hus been noted and interest is expected to be at ii higher pitch than ever, Basketball Little improvement was noted in basketball circles. For some reason or another interest is dead and it is only through the efforts of a few that love the game that any games at all have taken place. P.W.C.. Saints, Air Force and Y engaged in a few games but ul- though the brand of the hoop game being played was good never- theless attendance was very poor. Two girls teams also met in a series of games. the Rocketbes and a squad from P.W.C.. but as was the case -in the men's division in- terest being shown was negligible. Prospects for this season are no befttr but perhaps at the start of tiie year interest, will pep up and several leagues will function dur- ing the winter and early spring months, 80m, u I Softball made somewhat of a comeback with a City league coni- pcsrd of Y.M.C.A., Army and Navy playing out a schedule of games i111 through the season with the Y team iilblllll the City title as they beat. the Army team four straight games in the finals. Attendance at the games was real grbpd with the teams put- ting up a great brand of the pastime. The league started Out with four teams crighially with the Nav entering two squads but duc to rafts levning the province the league was la-ter cut down to three, these three finishing lhe schedule. The Knights of Columbus also had a flourishing league in ex- istence with much interest bein taken in these games also an this coinin season it is expected that they w l1 again be in operation. Outlook for this popular sport is really brighter than it has been in a good number of years and i943 is expected to furnish a. marked improvement. The battle for the Island ladies crown did not. take place, it being postponed for the duration of the Will‘ due to tiie large ntunber of players being engaged in different ti: l..»‘ Wulii. Cor- Tomorrow starts a brand new year along the sports front cud just what 1943 holds in stow AS still a matter of conjecture. Despite the trying times that the country is passing through sport boomed along all during 1942 but whether it. will Continue so remains to be seen. I I I I There were upsets, disappoint- ments, mighty feats dotted ell through the year with Toronto Maple Leafs probably staging the finest comeback when they came on to whip the Detroit Red Wings {or the Stanley Cup after losing the first three games. Then there was the R.C.A.F. Hurricanes cap- turing of the Dominion football crown and many other things that made the sports picture anything but p, gloomy one. . I I And of course with a country at war there was a sad tinge to it also. Fine athletes have paid the supreme sacrifice fighting for all they held dear but as the nation pays tribute to them and all tiie others that have given their Iives, they know that when death stared them in the face the‘r courage as it was on the playing fiecls was still undaunted and they went down with their spirits st11l un- conquerable.
