I do not think that the prisoner has no\v s per understanding of the charge per defence. (Yross-exainined by Mr. War'bui'ton. lirown wrote me a long document about his defence-it was very long and < Ihsked him to write it down so as to get the idea in one sent- ence. In reply sent to me another ciinieiit. (This document was nded to the (`hicf Justice. When I first went to nee the prisoner in jail he appeared to he sensible in describing his trouble. Un this visit I noticed hisl egotisni, his extreriicly exalted opin- ion of himself. I noticed also thatT he didn’t seem to realize the gravityf of his position._ When referring to` his position he claimed to be able tol clear the whole matter up and tliutl he could justify his course, to whichi He appeared to he perfectly satisfied with his own reasoning and conclu- term delusloiis. They were largely' along the line of perseeutioii by Mr.j Bentley. He attributed ull his trou-‘ hles to the treatment received nt the hands of Mr. Bentley and while in Mr. Bentley's oilicc, which troubles had forced him into his present posi-T tion . On other lines of talk his niemory struck me as very good~as‘ over n.cutc. I saw him later, on Dec., 3, 13, 21, and two or ‘three times inf January. (ln Dec. 3 I was in coni- pnny with Drs. Goodwill and Conroy I had then come to the conclusion' that the prisoner was not sound mentally. One visit was in company with Dr Henderson and one with Dix! Johnson. As ii result of my visits, I became more firm in niy conviction that the iiian was insane. The ques-l tion of the nature of his iiisauity,! and as to whether he was feiguing, iinturnlly occurred to me. Duringl these visits with the other doctors| he was often subjected to ii fire of: questions. I observed Brown nt.| those times _ Ile was always rendyi to reply. When questioned too milclii he would weary. I would occasion- ally ask n. question, and froiu his- auswers I did not think he was feign- ing. I am firmly of the conviction that he did not deceive the doctors. I watched him in thecfpectntlon of seeing hlni trip himself. If he hudi been feignlng it appears to me it would have been such a strain upon' him that I would expect to scc ri physical breakdown. Also I noticedl the irogress of his delusion the only paranoia. One thing he did notl feign his abnormally clear memory. Another point was that if he was. feigning _he would try to show his insanity to those close about him, and that he would have tried to show himself further removed from the bordcrlnnd of sanity. From my knowledge he has chosen the most difficult form of insanity to feign, On several occasions when we visited Brown he was nskcd for his defence, and he always spoke at length u- bout lt but we could not make any- thing of what he said. Dr. Conroy asked Brown to make out his de~ fence and some time afterwards I re- ceived two copies of the .document which has been read in Court and has been called Brown's defence. I con- cluded that the man who wrote this document was insane. In this dc- fence he claims that he was impclled to his course. He stntes that he was to receive a certain amount and that his brother was to provide his clothing, and yet he says he was compelled to act ns he did because he was forced to for want of money, The whole thing ls irrational. The document is n crystallization of the prlsoner's form of defence. lf it isa trick to impose upon the incdlral men it is very cleverly done-but I I disease I can class it in would hcT‘ Mit.
