Doubtless there is a good deal of truth in the above statement, but it is open to question. It there were death penalty for stealing and cheating, it would be exceedingly diflicult to secure convictions, and nine out of ten, criminals who would otherwise be convicted and severely punished, would in all pro- bability escape punishment. cases —The prospectus of a new associa- tion kaown as The Canada Sanitary Association, has recently been published. On its roli are the names of a number of physicians of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax, St. Johv and Charlotte- town. Initiative steps towards the form- ing of such a necessary association were taken in December last when the Health Conference was held at Ottawa. The objects of the association are briefly stated as follows: — 1. For the promotion of sanitary education and diffusion of sanitary information through out the whole of the Provinces. 2. For using the influence of its members to obtain joint legislation between the Federal and Provincial Governments, so as to enable more effectual steps to be taken when neces- sary to check the spread of infectious dic- eases. 3. To publish in its Sanitary Jeurnal, for the use of schools, lectures on the laws of hysics, hydrostatics, chemistry of sewage, isinfectants and deodorizers; water pollutions and analysis; proper methods of layirg drains and plumbing; ventilation of dwellings and — buildings, ete., illustrated by object essons; desivns of plumbing appliances and apparatus, etc 4. For mutual co-operation with Provincial and Municipal Boards of Health, in order to assist them, by its influence and the personal exertions of its members, in all matters relat- ing to the public health. Such an association cannot fail to accomplish a vast amount of good. In this Province at least where the very simplest laws of hygiene are being con- tinually violated, through the ignorance of its importance or vitality, the associa- tion will have a good field to work in. | Silyain, No. 29, St. John, N. On Saturday evening last the guests of this favorite summer resort gave an enter- tainment to their friends and others resident in the district, consisting of a series Of tableaux, interspersed with music, and fin- ishing up witha dance. The programme was as follows, viz:— 1. Overture by the Orchestra. 2. Little Bo-Peep and Boy Blue. 3. Blue Beard and Fatima. 5. Miliais’ Pictures, — ‘“‘Cherry Ripe” and **Cinderella.”’ 6 Helen’s Babies and Nurse. 7, Cinderella and Prince. God Save the Queen. The performauce was highly successful. A large, and it may be added, an apprecia- tive audience, assembled in the dining room which for the time had been converted into an impromptu theatre, with suitable stage effects, decorated with flowers, brilliantly lighted, and had a pleasing effect. Alto- gether the occasion was a very enjoyable one, the frequent encores testifying to the hearty good will with which the audience appreciated the performance. _~—_— om + P. E. Isiand and the Exhibition. Dr. Jenkins, of the Advisory Board, ar- rived in St. John on the Sth. Being inter- viewed by a St. John Sun reporter, he stated the principal objections that that body had to the revised prize list. The principal question is the classification of horses and cattlo. In the former there should, according to his view, ba prizes for Clydesdales, English Percherons and Suf- folks, In the first two classes there are from twelve to fifteen animals that would, in his opinion, be exhibited from the Island alone; but as far as the Percherons and Suf- foiks are concerned, the intending exhibit- ors do not care much for any alterations | but to perfect the list it ought to be made. Dr. Jenkins says that great dissatisfaction is felt at the entry of ‘‘Mare and Foal or evidence of having bred within two years.” The prevailing opinion on the Island is that this should be, ‘‘ evidence of having bred | within one year,” because the impression is that the entry has been made to favcr wae particular intending exhibitor in the Provinces. In there ought to be an additional prize at the least for the best hurdle horse. In grade cattle, there should be particular prizes for grade Ayrshire and short horns. To give t :ese additional prizes woul1 not, according | to De, Jeukins’ opinion, entail an expendi- | ture of $500, and he feels quite sure that | the prospects of the success of the Exhibi- tion would be greatly euhanced thereby. If the Commission refuse to make any alter- ations to meet the views of P. E Island. Dr. Jenk Lys thé little deubt bur that the imteuding exhibiters on the Island | wit decline to take part in the exhibition. | Ll.s view is that if the concessions sre made | it will promote good feeling between the! island and the mainland, leading to the | re 18 | Agricultural interesis reaping great benvfits, _ Ch’town, Aug, 8,.1883, class 5, for saddle beasts | Liverpool, G.
