W. D. Stewart, Minister of Public Works, paid a flying visit to our town on Saturday last. His election duties did not permit him to remain long. His visit was occasioned by the fact that a contract for supplying our county jail with nut coal was to be let. It _ appears that early in the autumn, s‘supply of nut coal was got in, which proved to be nearly useless—so much so that it was de. cided te procure a new supply, So Mr. Ssewart came to Summerside, and after making inquiries, he awarded the contract to political friend and supporter; to whom also, he sold the remaining nut coal, at, it is said, a merely nominal figure. Of course ne tenders were called for. But then there was no necessity for this while Grit officials were in the coal trade. — Progress. a Cateponian Cive.—At the annual meet. ing of Caledonian Club, held at the “St. Lawrence Hotel,” St, Andrew’s Day, (the 3 jth ult.,) the following office bearers were elected for the ensuing year :— ied ancmmenent> — Hon. Tue Domestic Montaty.— The Decems ber number of this popular Magazine, the last of four double numbers issued during the year, takes the-same complete and satisfactory survey of the whole domain of Fashion, for which it 4s held in such high repute. Its usual review of fashion presents an interesting and retiable: ccount of the preval:ng and fortheoming nov every department of the toilette: articles on Combination Costumes, Ladies’ and Children’s Costumes, Seasonable,}'s- brics, Trimmings, Millinery, Furs, Winter Wraps, Lingerie, etc., contain am abun- dance of fresh and practical information concerning those topics. Numerous illus- styles in the various garments for ladies and children, hats and bennets, coiffures, de- signs for needle and fancy work, etc., are provided, and the number is also accom~ panied by a handsome plate representing stylish street costumes. The literary con- tents are variedand unusually excellent. the principal attractions are the opening chapters of @ capital story, ‘Our Gover. ness,’ several poems of merit three very entertaining sketches, respectively entitled My Fortune, ‘How Nellie Lost Her Chance,’ and * Shakelton Grange,’ and an interesting paper. on ‘Christmas.’ The serial, ‘ My French Master,’ is concluded.
