I submitted many articles first semester and was disappointed with the appearance, especially the spelling errors in typesetting. I am very pleased with the work done on typesetting so far this semester. I was somewhat upset when the Senior Class Article didn’t make the January 12 issue of “The Gem”, although it was sub- mitted hours before the deadline. I was upset because the article contained important information for the upcoming week. Your error was more then ex- cused with the neat appearance of the combined articles in the Jan- uary 19 issue. The owl in grad- uation attire was a bonus that is very much appreciated. Also, the ad promoting the Senior Class Pub in the January 12 issue was excellently situated and attrac- tively typeset. Thank you for your extra ef- forts — they did not go unob- served or unappreciated. Keep up the great work! Thanks a lot for you constructive criticism and it is obvious that you do not want to “simply bitch”. The Promo- tion Coordinator as well as many others make posters on Cam- pus. The promotions Coordina- tor works with — and is supervised by the VPC - it is ultimately my responsibility to ensure the work the Pro. Coor., acceptable. Af- ter talking with the Pro. Coor., he, agrees that some of his work has been sloppy and will make a conscious effort to keep the qual- ity of his work up to par. The let- ter in last weeks issue has sparked a 2nd look in to Promotions Co- ordinator’s job, the time he puts in — the money he receives. The Gen ite ae ee oe ice Fire Evacuation Policies Updated by: Ellen Perry Evacuation policies for fire alarms in buildings across cam- pus have been updated; with the major changes being in Bernar- dine, Blanchard, and Marian Halls. The new policy in the resi- dences states that in the event of a fire alarm, everyone in the buildings must evacuate immedi- ately. Anyone who does not will be fined $20 for the first offense, $40 for the second and so on. Constable Wayne Squarebriggs, UPEI security offi- cer, said because of the amount of fire alarms being pulled, particu- larly in Blanchard Hall, the new policy was necessary. “..due to the high number of false fire alarms we had no choice but to go with the fining policy.” There has been one fire alarm in Blanchard Hall since the pol- icy was implemented and evacua- tion was quite successful, with no fining being necessary. Constable Squarebriggs said he hopes the new policy will not only make evacuation easier, but also make people more inclined to report anyone they see tampering with the fire alarms. “We are putting the respon- sibility on the students to report people fooling around with the alarms.” Anyone caught tampering with the fire alarms will be pros- ecuted to the full extent of the law, which could mean up to two years in prison.
