IHI Mlllllllllll Illllllllllllll. _| _ E g . WEDNESDAY. MARCH 8. 1899. * i _ 'rue nxrnnlrion QUEs1'1oN. During one of the farm missionary meetings recently held, Prof. Robert- son, in reply to a question from Mr. F. G. Bovyer of Georgetown, ex- pressed his great appreciation of pro vincial exhibitions. They furnish ooject-lessons, advertise the resources of the country and create enthusiasm among farmers, he said, and added _his opinion that each province should hold at least one exhibition yearly. What was thus stated by Prof. Robertson is true in part, if we add the qualifying clause which the cau- tious farmargnigsionary added-“if pro- rl man . PeBi1t all carefulobservers have noted that there is another side to the pic ture. There is a monotonous same- 'ness about exhibitions The biggest turnips, potatoes, mangolds and pump- kins of this year look wonder- fully like those of last year. The farm animal that takes a prize as a three V year old this year looks not unlike the same that took a prize as a. two year old last year. There isa painful monotony in the prize lists, too. The same names, and the same positions in the lists. And how frequently the man whose farm is a garden patch captures the prizes from the farmer who has a farm! It is quite clean that in instances where a competitor in many lines captures prizes by the dozen, that the prize is the chief object for which the solitary specimens were grown. This is not farming nor encouraging farming. Again, where the same mat, quilt or piece of fancy work takes first- prize year after year, is it not a little monotonous? Exhibitions, having ceased to pay their way and the rewards going to t-he few while the cost is borne by the many, resort has been had to all sorts of so-called special attractions to galvanise a little interest into them. Hence we have bands, fire- works, balloon ascensions, and, in St. J ohn, Halifax and else-I where an “Amusement Hall” where- in theatricals, concerts, tight rope performances, jugglery, and other en- tertainments are given. In the name of all that is agricultural, what have these to do with farming, or adver- tising the resources of the country? If then, the exhibition, so far as it is a display of the fruits of the earth and the constructive skill of our manufacturers, will not draw the peo- ple together,-if the people 'will not go out to see the prize turnips and prize cattle unless the bands play and rockets trail across the sky, is it not, common sense to give the exhibition , a rest until the people regain their appetite for such things? We may . have too much of a good thing. THE GUARDIAN is nct opposed to exhibi- V, tions, and will gladly see another at i some time in the future, greatly im- , proved if possible, and, as Prof. 1 Robertson puts ir, “properly manag-E ed.” Those two words mean a great , deal | I United States and the Phillipines will have way stations at Manila, and at aroused when he saw young men en- them as their spiritual teacher. But at the same time' there were opposition boats close at hand which might have been temporarily chartered tobring the surplus bags across. Why was not some arrange- mentof this kind made? The peo- ple who have had to wait for their ‘papers and letters care very little whether a government or an opposi- , tion boat does the work, but they do care that the work shall be promptly done.It looks as though sometimes too 'much red tape had interfered with our getting the best service to which we were entitled at all times. Had the con- servatives been as well or near as well organized as the Liberals. the result would have been different. Mr. Wood and himself would now re- present the Fourth District with sub- .stantial majorities. He then made a statement ol the# finances of the pro- vince saying that we had 'lost ground under the grit misrule. Mr. Mc- Lean’s speech was loudly applauded. Mr. Henry Wood spoke in his usual humorous sytle and brought his remarks to a close by saying that he was well pleased with the day’s proceedings. ' Mr. F. B. McRae said that this was a practical age, there was no place for the idler or the dreamer. lie was sure that the results of this day"s, work would be to place the party on a better footing and called " upon the Liberal- Conservative electors of Belfast to turn from the past writb its defeats and dis- apointments and face* the future and victory. Mr. McRae’s eloquent speech was well received. g ‘ Mr. James Paton of Charlottetown was next introduced.Like other speakers he had come to listen, not to speak. He was delighted to be present and méet such a large gathering- of Liberal-Com servatives and witness so much being accomplished as the way of or- ganization. The Liberal cause was losing ground, he said, and in our country the indications were that they would remain in power but a very short period. The following gentlemen also made short speeches which were practical and powerful :- William Murphy,Alex. Anderson, W. S. McDonald. John M. Grant,Seymour Young and Edmund Murphy. Avote of thanks was then tendered the retiring President and Secretary; both made suitable replys after which the association adjourned to meet at the call of the executive.-COM. ______;_.i; The craving for Alcohol, Opium, Cocin 1 Tobacco, Cigarettes can be cured at the Kcela Institutem Portland.
