Saturday evening was the date fixed for closing the ballot on the names of Eminent Islanders. Tho number of ballot papers received was not large, but! from tho names of the voters who arc responsible for them as well as for other ‘ reasons we conclude that the result may be acceptable as affording a fair indication of popular sentiment on the subject Those wholwnt in ballot papers were necessarily of the class who take an interest in the achievements of our pub- lie men past and present. It required on thsirpartsome thinking to cm-h select just twenty names and arrange them in the order of merit in which cncli voter thought they ought to bc plnccrl, and only 'bias well as interest lu the subject lywould take the pains to mail n list for l fpublication. In all something more than n. hundred different. names were voted for and there were a number of names which received an equal number of votes. in such cases the ties were decided by giving thc higher place to thc name which came on the average highest lu plncc on the lists received. It ought perhaps to be msn- tioned that for the nineteenth and twentieth places there wcre an equal number of votes for Rev. Donald McDonald, lion. Donal-i Farquharson. ‘ Rev. George llodgson and Daniel Gordon, and these were decided according to the ruiejust cited, by which the two first named came within the prescribed twenty andthe two worthy gentlemen last named narrowly cscnped that distinction? " ' ' The llst_oi' Eminent Islanders as it appears in another column isa good one embracing asit docs names emlaentin the state and in the church, in learning, in jurisprudence, in industry, nrt, journalism and letters. It embraces good names in the Liberal and Conser- vative ranks, in Protestant and Catholic creeds, and divides the honors between those who are living and those who have passed away. And this is true of almost every list we received thus cvincing both candourauda discriminating _judgment among those who voted. Doubtless some some will be dis- appointed to find a fnvorito name lower down on the list than thcyhud hoped, or perhaps not at all included among the twenty. But it should be remembered that those who are still living may yct i _.,,_,.,[_ < P. 'O. B.. 242, Charlottetown. zgdrf r w A I E D to rank still higher in the years to come. Book Keeper.
