Governor. several metribere of both Houses of the Legislature, the Judges of the Supreme Court, and several of the most respectable inhabitants of Charlottetown, meny Ladies were also present. ‘The lecture which was merely introductory, gave great and universal satisfaction; end, as Mr. Stiirk‘s manner is prepossessing. and his delivery good. we promise ourselves riiuch entertainment end instruction from an attendance on the course. \Ve were sorry to find that the learned lecturer labored under indis- position. Ilori Mr. Ilnll, at the close ofths lecture, moved a vote of thanks to Ilis Excellency. the Lieut. Gover- nor, for hie condcscension in attending on this occasion and the interest uniformly displayed by him, for the sgriculturiil and other improvements of the Colony, which was carried by accleuiation. It was eniiounced, that there would be a lecture, on Wednesday, lllih inst.,and the two succeeding Wednesdays. 9 To -rite Enrroa or IIass_ann's Gaze-r-re. Sir,—A a. general rule, I have always thought it best to refrain from replying to anonymous attacks, or personal observations of ever kind. and it is only because I know I hnn too well to he deceived, that I think it even now at all worth the w ‘le to take notice of your correspondent W‘s letter. There iss bliindness and gentleness of style in it which cannot easily be counterfeited. and as I have tasted the dish before, I think lain not likely to be mistaken in the flavor. The modesty which has induced him to conceal his name, whilst occupied in making a personal attack, is of the some amiable cast as the production itself. nndI will not therefore, attempt to de- prive him of all the glory and satisfaction, which his pleasing production must necessarily tifliird to himself and admirers. I shall therelore, merely give the public, two quotations om it ok of some authority called “ William John Lawson's Ilistory of Banking," the tint from page 173 of the Bos- ton edition 1852, and which is as follows :——“ In Scotland where there are no Government Savings Banks, the accumulations of the frugal, are paid into thejointstock Banks, and by them difl'used in facilitating commercial operations in the neighbourhood in which the money is collected, amongst these there have been no failures, whilst on the contrary, among the Eu list: and Irish Savings Bait s, numerous fuilgurcs have taken place, many of them accom- panied with serious and lamentable consequen- ces to the unfortunate depositors.” The Second is l'rotn page 236. “ The second branch of deposits consists, of small sums placed in the hands of the banks at interest. which are generally the savings of industrious mechanics, servants, &c., and which are placed in the banks to accumulate, and on which the parties may operate, not in the nature of a current account, but may receive e partial repii ment whenever they please.” " ' ‘bis branch of their business elppeers to be en extentiou of our Savings Ban s. The de- positors go to the bank half early or quarterly, and deposit the savings 0 their labor, which with the interest that has accrued from their prcrious deposits is added to the principal. this way it goes on uccumuletin , until the sum reaches the amount which t e depositor has calculated will sullicient to efect the object for which the deposit was flrst began, when the whole is withdrawn." This may be all preeminently absurd, in the estimetion ol‘ the ccrteoue end humble minded W. but it is nevertheless stated as foot, in a work written expressly for the purpose of giving information upon bsnkin sflutrs and which is highly com- ’tnended for its accuracy end l‘eithl‘uIncss in the London Btlinkcr‘s Magazine. em r Youi obedient Stewart, Caaaus uxsur. s-t E To rite Eur-rou or lIassauu's Gas:-rru. 8ir,—'I‘.
