Mr. Da- bue, assistant priest at St. Vincent de Paul, refused to answer a question in the witness box, and Judge Tait gave him two days to reflect, saying that he would have to answer or go to jail for contempt of court. Fire Losses During February, New York, March 13.—The Journal of Commerce and Commercial Bulletin says that the fire loss of the United States and Canada darisg February shows a total of $9,730,100, as compared with $11,297,600 in February, 1894, and $12,360,200 in February. A Big Strike of Painters, Saw Francisco, Mareh 13.—Eight hun dred painters are out on strike. They want an increase of 50 cents a day, mak- ing their wages $3 instead of $2.50. A general strike among the building trades is feared, a3 plasterers, carpenters and plumb ers are said to be in sympathy with the painters. A Monster Strike in Chicago Cuicaco, March 13.—All the union tailors employed in this city went on strike to day to assist the clothing cutters and trimmers who have been struggling for several weeks. In less than a week it is estimated that 25,000 to 50,000 men, women, boys and girls, whose garment work depends on the tailors, cutters and trimmers will be affected, The English in Egypt. When the fire broke out some 35 employes were in the building, and several had diffi culty in getting out. The less is said to be fully covered by insurance.
