F.—Regular night of meeting fall- ing on Christinas, the Patriarchs of Port la joie Encampment will meet for the election of officers and other business, on Thursday even- ing, the 26th inst., at 8 o'clock. Pcr Back Lrakxy.—The schooner ‘Lizzie } and Emma, of and from Summerside, P. E. L, for New York, which put into Halifax a few days ago, sailed on Tuesday and put back the same afternoon leaky. She was taken on the Marine Railway on Thursday, when her keel was found to be gone and her hull badly strained. She will have to come off and dis. charge, and go on the slip again for repairs. A wrong entry in the Stipendiary Magis- ; trate’s Court book led to the false report— inserted recently in the ExamMineR-~to the effect that Mr. John Lund of Lot 48 was fined for being drunk and incapable. Mr. Lund is a respectable farmer who doesn’t de ‘‘that sort o’ thing.” We regret the publication of the report. Masonic.—At the annual meeting of Victoria Lodge, held last night at Victoria Hall, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—W. H. Findley, W. M.; Neil Campbell, S. W.; W. Bathune, J. W.; W. R. Watson, Treasurer; J. A. Lawson, Secretary ; Rev. J. McLeod, Chaplain ; Wright, S. D.; C. Hanson, J. D.; E. Cameron, S..S.; N. Squires, J. S.; P. Lee, Marshal; A. McKenzie, Organist; F. Chandler, J. G.; John Hobbs, Tyler. Caps TormentTINe Rattway.—With a view of ascertiining the best railway route between Cape Tormentine and the I. C. Railway, sur veys have been made from the former point to Sackville? to Aulac, subsequently to Amherst. Thedistancefrom Cape Tormentine to Amherst, by route taken, is about 36 miles, or a little less than to Sackville, and the iine is not only ractically level, but so devoid of engineering ifficulties as to require not a yard of rock cutting aud no more formidable structure than a 20 foot wooden spin. The route surveyed is common to all three lines as far as Bay Verte, where all pass afew hundred yards west of Oulton’s Hotel. Tae GoveRNoR-GENERAL ON SKaTEs.— Says an Ottawa telegram :—‘' A few days ago the Marquis of Lorne went to skate on a pond adjoining the Rideau Park, and one of the constables was sent to the spot to drive away a number of boys who were also skating. His Excellency bade the constable desist, and in company with the boys the Governor-General spent a pleasant hour. The statement going the rounds of the press that the Governor-General and Prin- cess Louise have aecepted an invitation to be present at the annual fancy dress carni- val of the Quebec Skating Club is untrue. Even prior to the decease of the Princess Alice their Excellencies had no intention of leaving the Capital this winter.” Tur Market to-day was equal to any Christmas market which we have seen for years. ‘The upper department wasyabundantly stocked with saleables of all kinds which com- manded ready sales. The meat market was large, but the quality was not so good as gen- wala exhibited at Christinas. Blake*Broth- ers, however, exhibited a full stock of beef which was equal to any of their Easter ex. hibits. Prices were as follows :— Beef (small) from 5 to 14 cents; do. (qr) from 3 to 8 cents; mutton, from 4 to8 cents; Lamb, from 3 to7 cents ; pork (carcass) 34 to 4 cents ; geese, from 40 to 60 cents ; turkeys, from 75 cents to $1.40; ducks, from 20 to 30; chick- ens from 30 to 45 cents; butter (fresh) 20 to 23 cents; do. (tub) from 15 to 17 cents. — Married. At the residence of the bride’s father, on Wednesday, the 18th inst., by Rev. H. I, It was the calm and silent night !— Seven hundred years and filty-three Had Rome been growing up to might, _And now was Queen of land and sea! No sound was heard of clashing wars ; Peace brooded o’er the hushed domain; Apollo, Pallas, Jove and Mars, Held undisturbed their ancient reign, lo the solemn midnight (onturies ago! I. ‘Twas in the calm and silent night !— The senator of haughty Rome Impatient urged his chariot’s flight From lordly revel rolling home! Triumphal arches gleaming swell His breast with thoughts of boundless sway; What recked the Roman what befell A paltry province far away, In the solemn midnight Centuries ago ! IIL. Within that province far away Went plodding home a weary boor : A streak of light before him lay, Fall’n through a half-shut stable door Across his pata. He passed—for nought Teld what was going on within; How keen the stars! his only thought; The air how calm and cold and thin, In the solemn midnight { Centuries ago? iv. O strange indifference !—low and high Drowsed over common joys and cares : The earth was still-——but knew not why; The world was listening—unawares ! How calm a moment may precede One that shall thrill the world for ever ! To that still moment none would heed, Man’s doom was linked no more to sever In the solemn midnight Centuries ago! v. It is the calm and solemn night ! A thousand bells ring out, andthrow heir joyous peals abroad, and smite The darkness, charmed and holy now!
