-¢_... ., DETROIT ON ROPES 7Canadiens Deieai Re ingsi2-1 ln Overtime I DETROIT (AP)——Andre Prono- vost skated the length of the ice and scored the winning goal in sudden death overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 vic- tory and a commanding lead over the Detroit Red Wings in their semi-final series for the Stanley ' Cup Sunday night. Montreal took a 3-0 lead in» the series. Pronovost picked up a loose puck near Montreal’s blue line and raced goalward. He skated around the Detroit defence and pushed in the winner from five feet as goalie Terry Sawchuk slid out to meethim. The teams had battled score- less for almost 36 minutes from late in the second period. It had been a hectic battle as both goalies—-Sawohuk and Mont- ,1-ears Jacques Plante —— foil.-d scoring efforts time after tiihe. The tight, hard-checking battle went into overtime after the teams traded goals within a two- minute span of the second period. Forbes Kennedy gave the Wings a 1-0 lead at 14:07 on a fluke goal. His 75-foot flip from centre ice took a wierd hop over Plante’s stick into the Montreal goal. Plante had come out and settled down on one knee to make the save. PLANTE HIT HARD A half-minute later, Plante was felled when Bob Bailey cross- checked him from behind just outside the crease. Plante toppled‘ face down and remained there for three minutes before he was revived. The teams s k a t e d to their dressing rooms and the last 5:22 of the period was tacked onto the third stanza. Plante suffered a bump behind his .head, but re- turned to play brilliantly. , Bernie Geoffrion and Bert 01-m- stead attempted to fight with Bailey, but were held off. Geof- frion also had an altercation with rinkside fans and shoved his stick at them. ' . Royals On Playoff Trail, Leave For Sydney Tonight Charlottetown -Royals leave this evening by car for Sydney, N. S. where they play the next three games of the semi final series for the Maritime Senior Hockey Title against the North Sydney Combines. The games will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Should . any more games be required in this series, the teams will return to Charlottetown for the re- mainder. The Royals, showing superb condition, even though out of action for a few weeks, defeated the two games of the series play- ed at the Sports Arena. The Char- lottetown hockey fans ‘ wish the Clfiown Royals good luck in these next* encounters. Buck Whit1ock’s squad will be without the help of Spy Ready and Willie Dunn and at press time it was not certain whether Frankie Roper would beable to make the trip.
