One of the many evils engen- dered by the wars of this half century has been an erroneous conception of peace. Perhaps the urgency of war may demand the adoption of slogans and half- trutha; but having heard so fre- quently of war that would end all war, and of war that would make the world safe for democruy. we began to look on peace as a time when by some unknown process the world would become a bliss- ful paradise in which evil. and especially war. would cease to ex- ist. The strenuous activity and self-sacrifice of war was seen as a n "y demanded by the un- usual situation of the moment. Peace would mean the possibility of return to a life in which de- sires might be satisfied. to a life of pleasing and restful selfish- ness. But the peace we knew in the interlude between the wars and the situation we know today ll tnything but the ideal which we ften allowed ourselves to accept. For us of the twentieth century the question of war is no longer a speculative question: .we live in an age where war is never de- M0035 A Me-.I..EOD 'l.'l'n. will be closed all day today. The dream we allowed ourselves to accept. the dream of an effortless peace. has turned into a fearful night- mare. Because of fallacious hopes war is filled with disillusionment. There are two reactions and each is suicidal. The one seeing the fearful decay of society. seeks to ignore it. The world should not be so; therefore. man must carry on as if evil did not exist. So long as the evil of the world does not interfere with the small area of a man's immediate interest, he is satisfied. Whether this attitude produces moral or political isol- ationiem makes little difference. Man is secure within his own castle and the rest of the world, can solve its own ills. O O 0 O The other reaction fails like- wise to go to” the heart of the problem. Its followers-and the number is increasing--see the corruption of the world as some- thing too deeply rooted to allow any possibility of cure. There have been and there always will be ware. To think otherwise is to be unrealistic. As a consequence they seek to make the most out the existing circumstances. they strive to build world peace upon economic theories and they place their coniidence, for the so- lution of all immediate difficul- ties in the power of science. Either view is deadly, for to ignore the weakness of our so- ciety le actually to destroy it. We have accepted an idea of peace based on the notion of the nat- ural perfectlon of man. We have sought an earthly paradise of complete and effortless satisfac- tion. In its place, we must ac- cept a view of man and society that is based on reality. First of all, we must remember that the evil in man and nations that causes war. remains in time of peace. and must be controlled by continued and tireless effort. A true" peace is not the mathemati- cal result of a proportion of strength, nor is it is time of re-' laxatlon. but. in its ultimate and deepest significance. loyalty ments. This is the only way in which an orderly and tranquil common life may be attained. O O I 0 Next we must remember what we seek in peace. Not the earth- ly paradise of the nineteenth cen- to Jesus Christ and His command-I tury liberal or the Marxist of to- day. That notion has been per- fectly refuted by Selnt Augustine. in words that cannot be quoted too .often: "Thou best made us for Thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee." Men must realize that his perfect peace is in God and there alone. Such an attitude does not imply despair of a prac- tical solution of the problems of the world; it is simply a realiz- ation that no solution is final. The problem of each era of man's history must find its appropriate answer. There will be no univer- sal answer. since each period has special psoblems. But there will be a common purpose: the pro- duction in every age of the con- ditions which will foster justice and harmony in the lives of ne- tions and to! individuals. It is essential to remember that peace is the result of charity. not of justice. Justice removes the bin- PAIIKDALE HALL I - NIGHT! - 5 - OPENING WEDNESDAY.
