APRIL 26. 1952 -is o ,- 'I'I-IE GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTETOWN PAGE SEVEN Pilacli Stretch continued from page 6 ifiiisery comprises 1121 acres. The um population. excluslie of murders. has increased during the my. year. There are now 1111 standard Bred matrons at the arm and six trotting and pacing HEIIIOIII. Accommodations. have ncrcased proportionately with over in miles-of plank fencing enclos- pg 16 barns. There are stalls to ircommodaie 22'! brood mares and -nit barns that furnish room for inme 100 yearlings. The iamous ilmCEl.Ol'lc water of historic Castle- mn is pumped to every barn, field ".4 paddock on the farm. The ,-.1-nprl:-tor is Mrs. P. L. VanLcn- nap. While our farmers do not go to sll('Il expense as at Castleton, yet iw knowledge aoquired from years .11 experience they- seem to be ani:-. to handle their fields very rapribly and during the past sev- eral years we have noticed an as- tonishing improvement in the growth of Standard Breds from the time they are foaled until they are four years old. There are two- year-olds produced here now that are quite equal in size. quality of bone and in all their exterior ap- pearances to those grown in Ken- tucky. Years ago this was not tho case. A mare in foal was not given proper attention-that. is pastur- age or feed-and after Ioallng her diet in many cases was anything but what was required to develop her progeny quickly as present day conditions demand. Owners of Standard Bred breed- ing farms in the United States plan to sell 011' their feels as year- lings so as to make room for the new crop coming up and to lessen the expense that keeping them until their two- year- old form would entail. To encourage horse- men to buy yearllngs there are many very valuable stakes for two-year-olds to race for and readers of this page will note where two new futurities for two- year-olda in the Maritime: are on their way. namely. one sponsored by the Charlottetown Driving Park and Provincial Exhibition Associ- ation and one by the Truro Race- way Ltd. An observing starter in western United states last season noticed that a. certain horse scored well behind the (late but would breuk immediately after the start. Puz- zled. the next time he trained bi- noculars on the horse's face and observed its eyes became crossed from looking too intently at its disc number on the speeding gate. A set of blinkerl with a dividing plate in the centre eliminated the trouble. Yonkers Raceway claims to have the beat lighting system in tile world and they state this is de- manded by fans, horsemen. photo- graphers and television people. They claim a candle power ot 100 million, which is distributed and focused by 452 giant light. bulbs each of 1500 watts. They claim that this " ”” has ' eliminated the possibility of shud- ow. The lights are placed 80 feet high on ten steel poles around the half mile and on three towers atop the grand stand. Each tiood light cluster covers about 200 feet of the track. In addition Just be- fore the neld hits the wire four 10,000 watt lamps atop the grand stand are turned on for the photo of the nnish. Six 80, foot towers support the 50 one thousand watt flood lights which illuminate the parking area and entrances. Yon- kers. of course. can make such ct- penditures possible with the enur- pari-mutuel play it has. Our Mari- time plants have done wonderfully well we think. and visitors who have been to them have marveiled at the fact that such well lighted tracks are possible here. All cre- dit to those who so success iilly pioneered in this new and fascin- ating development in harness rac- ing. lat Payment 530.00 1st Payment 530.00 THE ROGERS eligible.
