oe ' : LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. The Civic Election. Sirx,—-The usual number of philanthro pists are awaiting the verdict. Heretofore it has been customary for rival candidates to remain all election day at the polls smiling and frowning alternately as friend or opponent appears rhis pract of in timidation should cease. Each voter must offend either one of the contestants. I[ would isk all honorable candidates to absent themselves on election day, thus giving us an opportunity of polling ‘ta free and independent vote. A just cause does not require question a able devices—every manly candidate will be satistied with the ¢ x pressed will of the people The canvass, as al present cen . . f so 4 ducted, is degrading. No vote shoald be promised until after nomination day, and any tru *kler who dares to pledge an elector prior to that time grossly insults his inte: ligence and should be shunned As a fact, the canvass $ most pernicious ; everyone understands the situation, and does hot require the senseless har buiggue indul red inh by ward politicians A reform in our civi¢ polities is much required. Yours, January 11, 1589. An ELECTOR. ; Pa : Retiring Councillors Srr.—Would it not be well for those gentlemen whose term at the City Council Board is now about to expire to call meet ings in their Wards, if pot a general neet- ing of citizens, and place their views pub licly before the taxpayers. It seems, with one honorable exception (Mr. McLean, Ward 5), that this straightforwardand manly course is shunned by those would-be repre sentatives of public opinion. All they deign to do is to cause inseriion among your locals of short paragraphs, such as **In the field again,” & your city ] . | 1 : . e! . Elderly Ladies’ Ciub. : At the regular meeting, held last evening, the President suggested that a subject should be submitted to the Club for con- sideration bearing upon One of the import- wit topics of the day Sister Prepence thought that the thanks of the meeting should be tendered to the Hon. A. B. McKenzie for the manly tand taken in Parliament by him on _ be- half of the sisterhood, in extending the franchise to those having property in their own right, and would move that a vote of thanks be conveyed to him through che iumns of the Darmy ExamINer, which was seconded and carried unanimously. SISTER ProGRess said that as an election fur City Councillors would take place in a few days, it was their duty to support good teniperance men, who would see the Scott Act enforced, and thereby save their hus- bands, sons and brothers from the curse that is demoralizing them, and to use all their influence to prevent the rumsellers md their friends from getting control of eity matters, Sister EnerGy proposed that a com- mittee of five, one for each ward, be ap- peinted to canvass the Jady voters in favor of the temperance party, and endeavor to induce the the luke-warm temperance people to rally their forces on the day of leetion. Seconded and carried without Op- position Sister FINaANce said that as it would re- quire sume funds to scatter good temper- ance literature among the citizens, she would move that a subseription list be opened and donations soidited to assist in carrying the coming election, and hoped thereby to return a thorough temperance man in each ward She would head the list with $5. Motion was seconded and carried with applause. The following committee was then ap- pointed, viz., Sisters Finance, Determina- tion, Energy, Goodwill and Undaunted. Oumotion, the meeting adjourned till that night week, then to meet at the residence of Sister Prudence, and report progress. SISTER SALVE-IT-OVER. A Smart Boy.
