OUR STREETS, SQUARES AND DRIVEWAY. Tue repair of our streets hae, necessari- ly, been somewhat neglected this vear on account of the s»werage work. ‘But we are pleased to note a decided and gratifying Improvement in reepect tO Our equares. | Rochford Square and Hillsborough Square | have been made pleasant to look upon; and (Queen Square continues to be highly cred- |itable to Charlottetown. Mr. Tate is to igratulated upon the improvement | resulting from the removal of the old fence and the nicely-trim:ned borders. Though the flowera are not all—as we have re- cently seen—suflicieatly cosily to please |} every taste, it cannot be denied that tne Queen Square Garden, a3 a hole, is skilfully maintained and worthy of the ad- miration bestowed upon it by strangers. Thedriveway on the wateraide of Victoria 'Park, now almost completed, is an } |unique attraction in connection with our ‘city. Wedo sot think that there is any- ‘thing equal toit or the landscape beauty itreveals upon thie side of the Atlantic. /Ifit should appear that the work done this year has not cost too much, the thanks of the citizens will be specially due the councillors who have carried it to com- pletion. The park is becoming more and more a place of popular resort ; aud ifthe ugly hizh white fence dividing it from Government farm were replaced by a neat iron structure, there would be little or nothing to mar the quiet beauty of the spot or limit its attractiveness for all sorta and conditions of people. We are rot without hope that an opportunity for its enlargement by the addition of the fields at the rear of Government House, may ere long occur. AN AWFUL CONFESSION OF RASCALITY. The Weat Elgin election trial . was con~ cluded with a most deplorable ackrow- ledgment of preconceived, organized, and scientifically accomplished wrong-doing on the part of tbe election agents of the Liberal Government. Mr. Macnish, the successful Liberal candidate, makes over his signatuie aclean breast of the ~hole thing. He says, in brief, as follows :— “1. A large number of persons were specially sent into the constituency by men workirg on behalf of the Liberal party for the express purpose of taking part in the election On Macnish’s behalf and fraudulent and corrupt meaos were used by some of such persons to carry the election. “2. Several of such persone i!legally acted as deputy returning officers, and in at least three cases acted ii the names of reputable Jocal men. “3. Io many of the polling eub-divi- sions there were “grave irregularities” connected with the return of the ballot boxes and the counting of the ballote. “4. There were ‘arge numbers of persons broaght into the riding ‘for the express purpose of personating legitimate voters, assistance by some of Mr. Macuish’s local supporters, euch persons personating qualified voters.” “5 The declared number of votes large- ly exc -eded the number of buna fide votes cast for Mr. Macnish. 4 A large number of ballote cast for Mr. McDiarmid was in some nefarious aad currapt manner manipulated whereby the result of the election was rendered doubt- ful. “7. There are good reasons to believe thatthere are many specific and wel! an- then ticated cases were agente of Mr. Mac- nish concealed at their homes.some of the etrangers, who paid largs sums of money to electors to induce them to vote for Mr. Macnieb.”’ After this terrible summary of the means whereby the election was carried, Mr Macnieh offered toresign his seat. [t was however, necessary that evidence eufficieut to void the election sbould be heard; and the court received proof of the ballot- stuffing charges, the sheriff, who acted as returning Officer, admitting that the strang-~ ers imported ‘nto the constituency te manipulatethe ballots were employed by him onthe recomimendation of certain parties, Cough Cured in a Night. But for this fact we should probably never have had Pick- wick’s nocturnal adventures at the Great White Horse, nor would we have heard of the Eatanewill Gazette and the Eatanswi!! Independent. ESTEEMED EXCHANGES. Montreal Star: The Hon. Thomas Greenway anooances from the platform that his tripstto the east only cost between twoand three hundred dollars a year. But one iiem in the public accounts reads “Hon. Tuomas Greenway, expenses to O niario, etce., $750.” As the hon. gentle mao travels on a free pase it is obvious that the greater part of the seven hundred and fifty dol!ars must bave been spent on “et cetera.” This theory harmouizes beautifully with the Premier’s statement that his eastern trips only cost two or three hundred a year. Now the boys wanttoknow what “et cetera” is like. Do you take it before orafter meals, and can you get at it without a corks- screw ? Itis eaid that the soldiers who had taken Hood’s Sarsaparilla stood the long marches in Cuba much better thaa the otbers. —— CHARLOTTETUWN Business College — AND— Writing Academy Will re-open for the Fall and Winter Term Ont AUCUST 2cth.
