ACen CURRENT NOTES. Asan iliustratien of the labor at the present time in this try, it may be mentioned that the ¢ adaPacifie Railway is applying through a Buffalo agenc\ for a thous: and men. Chis means immediate employment for who can- “WUe the poorer cass of immigrants, not at once take up farm: inthe Nerth- scarcity oft coun- | the large stock on ha: West, and it shows a scarcity of labor- | ers exists, however desirable ‘altima ely itmay be toridthe country of Chinese, we cannot do without them on the great Railway undertaking io Brit- ish Columbia at the present time. John William Ramsay, Earl of Dal- housie, whose name is mentioned in connection with the Govervor- ; LO sh p-General of Canada in succession Lord Lorne, is a man of wide popu- larily, high talents and io the prime of life. He was boro January 29th, 1547, and succeeded his fa sth. Earl in July, 1880, shortly after his election to the Heuse of Commons as member ihber as for Liverpoo He was marr edin De- cember, sere to L ady lia Louise Bennet, dauvhter of the Earl of Tank- erville. The Dalhousie family is an old, a distinguished and a wealthy one, having been of note ia North Britain since the time of David L., 1140. The work of extending the Pacific Railway, west of the Sturgeon Falis, above the Mattuwa, being pushes d forward with redoubled activity since the snow disappeared, and it estimated that there are now over two thousand men employed on that portion of the road. An elegant irep structure spans the Sturgeon River at this point, andthe track at present extends over thirty miles beyood. Itis suid rapidity with which the road is being buitbas far surpassed the most san- guine expectations ofthe contractors, who expect to have a june ion effected with the Alyoma Divisionof the same railway before September next. The senior Superintendent, Mr. Archer Baker, M .jor Rodgers, and other pro- mivent railroud Officiais inspected the road at the end of the past month, and found everything in first-class condi- tion. Is There has lately been quite an out- break of pugilism at Arhland, Pa. On Sunday night, the 6ih inst.,Mike Casey and Vint Harkness quarrelied over eards in « saloon and afterwards fought fifteen rounds, Harkness being declared the winner. Both were badly punished. During the preparations for the fight the wilcest excitement prevailed, and revolvers and knives were freely used. The principals in the fight have been secreted to avoid arrest. William Kelly and Michael Cascy also fought on the same night twelve rounds, Kelly winning. Casey was knocked down seven times in succession, and both were severely punished. Joha Gal- lagher and ove Meehan, well known young men, fought five rounds tie other day on account of a yousg lady, Mechan wioning. The young lady is reperted to be proustrated. A new use has been discovered for oyster shells. For years they have been used forthe manutacture of lime as manure, for decorative purposes and in the preparation of a cheap imitation of marble; but it is now found that they cannot be better util- ized than by beiwg thrown in quantities into the sea, where they make the best foundation for new oyster Leds. In July and August next many ship loads of these empty shells will be sunk by English and Freaoch oyster farmers in various places suitable for the purpose, anda few healthy living oysters will then be dropped upor the same spots Experiments have proved that under such conditions the bivalves will shortly multiply to au almost incredible extent, and in so brief a period as ‘two veurs each empty shell will have from thirty to forty young oysters attached to it. The new generation can then be re- moved to make room for more, and fattened for market in specially con- structed tanks. The Greut Prench ‘Remedy, Dr. LeDuc’s Periodical Pills. GEORGE R, STRONG, Ch’town, April 13.-—-Im eod wkly 4i bhi ‘, \ JE have made ar: hs ance with the best makers of Gas Stoves in the United States, which we will be able to sup- ply the patlic, at the lowest possible price. We have also agreed with the Gas Com- pany (fer the purpose of introducing these stoves), to sell the first fifteem (15) for which we may receive orders, At their Net Cost, LANDED HERE. TESTIMONIALS. The following are a few testimonials from a list of several hundred :— The capacity of the Stove is surprising. With a No. 8 Stove we cooked tor a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, aud baked biscuit, in 45 minutes, at a cost for gas of 45 cents. On another occasion we gave a dinner in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows : Brouled shaa, beef steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table thiee times. All was accomplished in one hour and forty minates, at an expense for gas of eleven cents. ‘This work was all done on one No. 8 tove. All were enthusiastic over the manner in which the oysters, tish and meats were cooked ; none had experienced any so tender, juicy, and of such fuli flavor before. We consider the stove a great success, and most complete in all its parts and arrangements. A. C. Woon, Supt. i bought one of your No. 12 Gas Cooking Stoves last September, for use in my restan- rant, and have used it ever since for baking, broiling and stewing. 1 can say for it that it is always ready and does its work rapidiy; that there 1s no dust, no dirt, no surplus heat, as we are using only that portion that we need, and as soon as the article is cooked the gas is extinguished and there is no waste. I think it will do the same amount of vvork at less cost than coa!, even at the high price of gas. It takes much less room than a coal range that would do the same work. I am perfectly satisfied with it and would nct be without one for double the price, J, T. HARKER. The Gas Stove you sent me, I am glad to say has proved an entire suceess. If my testimony is of any value to you, you are at iiberty to use it. ‘the decrease in the coal bill more than offsets the increase in the gas ditto. The cooking is excellent and uni- form in its operation. No dirt or dust irritates the careful house- wife, and Mrs. 8. describes it as a ‘‘ real treasure.” In my humble opinion, any man who really wants tu add to the number of allotted days of his better-half, had better invest in a Gas stove and save her worry, and himself ex- pense, W. H. Srymovr. We are perfectly delighted with our Gas Stove. It gives entire satisfaction in every ret pect. Mrs. M. PennincTon, 2:03 Vine St. Your favor of the Ist inst. was duly received asking my opimoneof the Gas Ceoking Stove bought last May, and in reply, would state that the satisfaction rendered by the stove was far be;ond my expsctations, and the werk it will accomplish is marvelous, together with the smal] expense and comfort attending the same. Epwin A. Garett. Having used one sf your No. 7 Gas Cooking Stoves for a considerable time past, it is with pleasure that I bear testimony to its genuine merits. lt boils, bakcs, broils, roasts, and in fact, does everything thata first class stove or range can do, and with a saving of time and labor, that can only be appreciated by those who use them, It has given us the most entire satisfaction. and to use my wife’s words, **I would sot be without it for ten times the cost.” From statements of ovr gas meter taken, we find it more economical than coal.
