S. Princess for a perusal of the interesting report. From it we compile the following facts. Icebreakers are of many forms and dimensions from asteam launch 40 feet long to the enormous Ermack of B 000 tons and 10,000 horse power. Infact Russia was the pioneer in the ice-break ing business, although most of her famous winter steamers were built in British yards. The very first recognised lee- breaker was a tug called the Pilot of Cronstddt, which with a new iron-clad bow built upon hr-r was set to work. Ir was superseded in 1589 by two small steamcrs equipped for work in the ice which acted as ordinary tugs in thc open season. These vessels, the Zarga and the Luna, were nf 150 horse power each. Hamburg, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark, followed the lead of Croastait and at Hamburg there arc now' several ice-breakers. The first at Crpcrinagen was of 800 horse power, but another has been added of 2,000 horse power and 1,450 tons displacement. Finland ha-1 two famous ice-bre tkers, capable of steaming 8 knots an hour through field ice of i2 to 16 inches thickness and making two to three knots In drift ice 8 tc l0 feet thick. At. Christiania, Norway, latitude 58 there is a fine ice-breaker which keeps the channel frt-e for the passage of ships at all conditions in those loebound seas. There are also loc-breakers at. Odessa, R. ga, Stockholm, Kiel, Roscotf, Stcttin, Liban, Austerdam, Calmur. Nicctlsk, Vladlvoatock and other places. The lecturer also described the ice~breaking Clifton, New London. , rr rl tst. 1 mo. mail boat Stanley belonging to the Cana- dian Government, hut he or his reporter I o | J CARPET SNHPS We are selling 5ooo yards carpet at 20, 30 and 50 per cent off regular retail prices. Many ports are being kept open in the 3 Barrio and Northern r-nrmpe, in rar- rrrgrr. ier latitudes than ours and where the ice- cofrdlticns are much more severe. Canada l is behind the age in having but two of llhesc craft, one nf them built lu the err`y I days of ice-breaking, where we ought to i have at least twice that number. We say this notwithstanding the good i work done during the present winter. A third winter steamer of greater weight an far greater power has become an lm~ V pzrative necessity and no time should ha lost. in giving the order for her construc- tion. Suohasteamer could easily keep the port of Charlottetown open all winter to the great advantage of the entire Island ofthe adjoining Provinces and of the travelling public. Without a third staam~ er the conditions of the federal compact to keep up daily steam communication between the Islsnd and the Mainland can never be adequabelypr even approximate- ly fulfilled.
