" THE @©Ea@NlIébll/I EEIBAEIEo SATURDA Y, JUNE 20, 1840. .. * i No small excitement was created here yester- , ’ day by the arrival of the UNICORN, one of Mr. v " f’Cl'Jnard’s splendid Steamers, intended, we under- ;atand, to ply between Pictou and Quebec. The . goccurrence was quite unexpected, ‘as we had teceired no previous intimation of her coming , . re. As she dashed up to the wharf, she pre- , merited I most animating and noble spectacle-- flier decks crowded with troops gave a martial ' ' i appearance to the scene, such as we are not every day favoured with. It turned out, that she had l board a detachment of the 8th Regiment, "sent to relieve the detachment'of the 37th, which flies been'stationed here for the last twelve R (months. Much .as we were struck with her < noble hearing, as she made her rapid approach. 1‘ we confess we were still more thunder-struck , *at the splendour of her internal decorations. , ' - Every facility, consistent with the maintenance v order, was afforded to the numerous parties who crowded on board, and soon filled her ele- ,. gem and spacious saloon. Amongst the com- ' sny._embracing all the rank, beauty and fashion ‘ of Charlottetown, we observed the Right Hon. " the Countess of Westmorland, who expressed herself highly gratified at the animating specta- _ .cle. It'was much regretted that His Excellen- ' cy Sir Charles and Lady Mary Fitz Roy were 5‘ not ‘present--they having left town the day . previous irrThree Rivers. To attempt to give a desoription of the beautiful vessel would far I . - , v exceed our powers—we shall therefore simply ' content ourselves by transcribing the following short extract from an English paper, which de- scribes her accommodations and appearance in brief and comprehensive terms :— “ She is commanded by Captain Douglas, a gentleman ofgreat experience, -and has engines of three hundred horse power. The accommodations of the Unicorn are f! «- ,. ‘ 1 of the same splendid description as those that character- ise the Glasgow steam ships generally. Her saloon is _ ’ re acious, and finished in the stfi of the days of“ Good I , &uoen Bess," in solid rosewood, with panels, or centre . ' pieces, in each compartment, formed by richly gilded an- tique .foliated frame work, within each of which is a Chinese view on a bright green ground, in the finest ju- '. V pan. The furniture corresponds, and the smaller cabins ‘ U .and sleeping-rooms are finished in corresponding style, 7 , and fund with every possibleconvenienco." » ' The—Detachment of the 37th Regt.‘ u‘nder .v ,~ "raw-TV" ' Qnsaac, June 2.—0nlSurndsy, Her, Majesty’s} Troop- ‘ship Athol sailed for England, having onboard the 15th. THE unanimous decision of the twelve Judges of Englaujdmn the question oftlie Clergy Reserves in Canada, recently expressed in the House of Lords, hav- ing shown, indisputably, that the claims oftlie Bishop of Nova Scotiu, on the part of the Church of England, to the wholeof the proceeds of the Globe Lands in this Island (to the entire exclusion ofall other religious deno- minations, and more especially to that of the Church of Scotland), are without foundation, inasmuch as that the terms “Ministers of the Gospel," in reference to this Island, must (according to the plain and obvious mean- ing oflanguage) be equally comprehensive, and, in con- sequence,_ bear the same legal construction with the terms “Protestant Clergy” in relation to Canada; it is, therefore, requested, that all those, professing to belong to the Church of Scotland, who feel interested in this important matter, will meet at the Wellington Hotel, in Charlottetown, on Tuesday, the 30th instant, at the hour of 12 o’clock, noon, in order to consider the propriety of addressing a Petition to the Right Honorable Her Majes- ty’s Secretary of State for the Colonies, on this subject, to the effect, that, iftlic moneys arising from the sale of Glebe Lands in this Island be at all diverted from the object to which they were appropriated by the Act Assembly ‘viz:——“ for the purposes of general educa- tion," th‘ " he Members oftlie Church ofScotla with- in this Co on'y may not be deprived of their 'and equal share ofthem. .}, JOHN MACLENNAN, Minister. ,Pinette,16tli June, 1840.
