Canada's Population Has l Passed 16,000,000 Mark OTTAWA 4CPl-Canada's pop- ulation passed the l6.0w000 mark last year after a booming five- ymr gain which almost matched the numerical increase of the pre vious 10 years. The bureau of statistics reported today that its census takers last June liuund 16,080,791 person: living in Canada. The census. first of its kind to be taken on a five-year basis. showed an increase of 2,071,362 train the 14,009,429 counted at the 1931 census. The gain compares with a decade's growth in 1941-51 of 2,502,774 during which New- foundland entered Confederation. Not counting the 10th province, fitc 10-year increase was 2.141.358. Arthur Clinton, of this city, was convicted of two counts of unlawful possess- slon of milk and Earl Arsenault, after an admission of guilt to Mr. Nicholson during cross-examina- tlon. was convicted of two counts of theft of milk. Both men will be sentenced this morning at 10.30- Mr. Gillis presented pleas of len- iency to the court before Reid and - Dingwell were sentenced. In sen-l tencing, the trial judge stated that the court had power to sentence up to ten years in the penitentiaryj on any of the defendants counts. He said that there was no reason why these men could not make an honest living but they strayed two other ways and for this they are punished.
