farmers who will still be able to do
a. profitable business in raising dairy
cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and seed
oats.
The question to be thought out is,
will tha small farm pay? It has al-
ready been demonstrated that tive
actos of land under strawberries will
yield a much larger yearly return
than tha average hundred acre farm.
And strawberry culture is only one
of a dozen or more lines that can be
followed with equal profit.
Our one great problem is bow to
retain and increase our present popu-
lation. The solution of this problem
will be worked out when by a. sys-
tem of government-directed small
farms it will be clearly demonstrated
that the small farm pays.
POINTERS FROM THE LAND.
Rev. Dr. W. H. Smith, of Freder-
icton, N. B., and well known in this
province, having been for some years
pastor of the Summerslde Presbyter-
ian Congregation, writing to a Can-
adian paper from England, where he
is at present visiting, tells of a Sab-
bath spent in London.
As a clergyman should, even when
away from home, Dr. Smith attend-
ed church, moming and evening. One
of the points which he emphasizes,
unfortunately a novel sight '_`for a
Canadian, was that during the morn-
ing service, in a church witha seat-
`ing capacity of two thousand and
comfortably filled, “the great major-
ity were men." In the evening, "half
nn hour ‘before the service began every
seat was taken and hundreds were
seated in the passages. The men were
still in the great majority."
In Canadian cities, none of which
it is necessary to name, the general,
the maiority to bc found in church,
‘Sunday morning or evening or on
Wednesday evening, are women.
The point that Dr. Smith makes is
not that London women are not as
good as they ought to be but that
thc men attend church in larger

The other fact to which reference

noon meetings for men, organized as
a brotherhood, a special feature be-
ing an address 'by some outside
speaker, lay or clerical. For week
days and evenings there were men‘s
meetings, women's meetings, Young
People's Institute, Men's Club, Men’s
and Women's Club, Men's Gymnastic
Club, Boys' Club, Swimming Club,
Rambling Club, Cycling Club,'Tennis
Club and a number of other associa-
tions and clubs, announcement of the
meetings of which was given as part
of the order of service. _.
"And the men were in the great
majority.” This is the result of tba
system followed. -
In Canada we have raised a har-
rlsr between religious and, so-called,
secular activity. It is perfectly legi-
timate lor us to discuss politics and
world problems at public "'sccular"
meetings but we would be shocked
unspeakably if thcso matters were
dlscussedin connection even with our
week-night church services. Politics
does not constitute any part of our
religious life and our politics shows
it.
It is perfectly legitimate for us to
play tennis, golf, cricket, hockey, and
other games, but they must be rigid-
ly excluded from our church institu-
tions and they, too, show it.
If our _churches are "the salt of the
earth" they should "salt" our secu-
lar as well as our religious life ‘and
their influence should extend to the
controlling' and ‘the purifying and en-
obllng of our sports and pastimes

dance of histrionic, musical, elocu-
tionary talent awaiting development.
Why not clubs which might occasion-

tal- gymnastics as our athletic clubs

of our church organizations.

order given by the Pacific Mail
Steamship Company for the construc-
tion of four large steamers at an
expenditure ol about twelve millions,
a United States exchange says: "This

passage and signature of the canal
