Having once discevered a means ef determining the minutest traces of alcohol, M. Of course the aciual quantity of alco hol present is very minute, but the existence ef it under such circumstances proves that spirit is net alone p roduced by the art ox man, as some lecturers would have us believe, but is one of the transformation products of cer- tain types ef orgavic matter, when splitting up under the intlueace of ferments or cell life generally. - _ > —_— Tue latest works of Mr. Robert Harris are the portraits of two of the children of a New York gentleman. As likenesses the pictures are, we understan«, excellent, and as works of art, they are inco.aparably beyond anything ever executed in this province. We question, indeed, whether two such exqiui. itely tinished and life-like por‘raits were ever before painted in Canada. Mr. Harris’s reputation as an artist has grown vecy rapidly of late years. He was buried on the Island, but when he re- moved to Toronto his ability was at once re- cognised, and a high p'ace among the painters of the Dominion was immediat-ly assigned him, We are quite satisfied that he has not yet raached the positiou in the world of art that he deserv«s ty» oceupy, aud that when he comes to work in # wider sphere and among competitors more worthy of bim. he will he considered the equal of artists whe have won a European reputation. —Putriot. —-——- Tux Lvona Mrve. ~The Gothie City Drion of the 26th inst eays: On Saturday last quite an excitement was munifested in this city over another strike in the Luona. Four men had been eet to vork in a mew place, ata dis- tance of about 59 feet north of the main tua- nel. At that place on evidently the outcropping of a vein, but no one, until re- centl reopened to pay much attention. On Tuesday morning Mr. Fletcher ordered the foremen to set four men to dig there until Saturday night, and if notuins were found by that time, to di charge the men. On Saturday morping a perfect vein, about five or six feet wide, was reached, which was literally filled with white spar, carrylog native aud wire silver and silver glance. The vein is pronounced to be even richer than the ene now worked upon, and quite a number of sacks of ore have been taken from it. A tun- nel of the vein will be begun at once and work driven on it day and night. No. | tun- nel continues to do well, but it is generally believed that No. 2 will exceed it in richness. From present indications, it is likely to run the full length of the claim. This ** strike makes the Luons doubly valuable, and stock ought now to double itself. The febrile rise did not begin until about a quarter past four this afternoon, and, although the tempera- ture and pulse are a little higher than last oight—the former being 100 and the latter 110—the fact is accounted for by the pres- ence of a considerable accumulacien of pus in the glandular swelling, which was re- moved at the evening dressing. The gland looks much better to-night than at any; time since it became a dangerous feature of the case. The wound is also doing ex- tremely well. The process of granulation having recommenced, the patient’s general condition is still further improved. Dr. Baxter is reported to have said to a friend this afternoon that if the President’s stomach holds out and if he is properly cared for he will probably recover.
