Rhoad preached to an ap- preciative and attentive congre- gation’, taking for his subject "Sal- vation through Faith", as found in Romans 4:12-17. Following l: a. brief outline of the address: In this passage of Scripture the apostle Paul is continuing his argu- ment ol’ Justification by faith and he is continuing his proof of it from the Old ‘Testament. He speaks first of the covenant which God made with Abraham. To this cov- enant there was attached a prom- ise. The promise wax that he was to be heir of the world. '.T‘iiis prom- ise did not come by means of the Law because this promse was given to Abraham centuries before the giving of the law through Moses. This promise came through the righteousness of faith. This promise was made to Ab- raham and to his seed. TIIOSG who believe in Christ are the true spir- itual heirs of Abraham. For thc promm made by God to Abraham was concerning Christ, Gcd said to Abraham, "And in thy seed shall all the nation; of the earth bc blessed." (Genesis 22:18). That promre was concerning Christ who was o. descendant of Abraham. Ab- ruham believed and accepted that promise. Through Christ salvation is brought to all who believe in him and hence all the nations of the earth are blessed in Christ who is the seed of Abraham. Ab- raham believed the promise, so must we also believe in Christ. But the promise is also that ‘be- lievers, the spiritual heirs of Ab- raham, shall be great. "Thy seed shall possess the gate of his enem- ies." (Genesis 22:17). The heirs of Abraham shall be a great 110st. Paul in interpreting this says that Abraham was heir of the world. In other words the belief of the apostle is that history is moving to n. consumatlon. It is moving to a consumatlon in which the kingdom of God will be visibly established and over which Christ shall visib- ly reign. Abraham looked forward to that time and received 1t by faith. It must have seemed quite impossible in his time. He was a wanderer. He owned no land. He and his household. the worshippers of the true God, were few in num- bers. Yet he knew that God had spoken and he believed that what Gc‘ had spoken was true. It was not what Abraham could do or what he could establish, it was rather what God would do. So we also today believe in Christ and believe the promise of God. that God will establish his kingdom and that Christ shall visibly reign. Come what may. God's word will be fulfilled. No power on earth will be able to stop that fulfillment. Our hopes are built upon the cqn- fidence which we have in God. The promise made to Abraham came before the giving of the law through Moses. The law is differ- ent from the covenant made with Abraham. The promise was of Brace. It was received by faith. Not so with the law. Paul never speaks disparaslngly of. the law. But its nature is different from the prom- ise. It has a different purpose. Its purpose is to hold up a perfect ethical standard. It is to reveal the conduct which is well pleasing In God's sight. Man must pay at- tention to these things. But the law i; not the means to salvation nor the means for establishing the kingdom of God. It marks the line between what is right and what is wrong and the judgment of God which is upon all wrong doing. It 77w Central Guardian CBASWELL for Photographs. I CONFIIDEBATION LIFE [N SUB- ANCE.
