He can strike a match, and light his pipe with it the windest day that ever lived, Black and Blackmore, two of the strongest English novelists, will each begin a story in the August Harper. The former is called “ White Wings,” a yachting romance; the latter, “ Mary Anerley.” When a woman combs her back hair with two ropes, holds one in her mouth until she winds the other upon her tuck comb, and then finds that she has lost her last hair pin, she feels that the sex needs two mouths—one to hold her hair in, and the other to make remarks with, The newly arrived English work- people at the Dundas, Ont., Cotton Mills had a bit of misunderstanding about wages, and struck work last Sat- urday, till it should be settled. They say they were promised $5 to $9 per week by the agent in Britain, and have only been getting $4.50 to $o. Fifty poor orphan boys at a House of Refuge for the poor at Trieste res cently set upon the Saperintendent of the institution and killed him. A war- den who came to his assistance was wounded, and the police and Municipal Guard had to be called in to quell the disturbaace and march the boys off to prison. In Lawrence, Mass., they are reduc- ing their civic expenses and have cut down the school salaries: the Princi- pal of the high school from $2,500 to $2000 ; to establish the salary of the superintendent at $2000; first-grade teachers from $550 to $500; seconds grade, $500 to $450; third-grade, $450 to $400. The delights of sovereignity are il- lustrated in the announcement that Emperor William has pardoned out 600 prisoners whose crimes were “ of- fences against himself.’ It gives a suggestive vision of many others ready fora crime against the person of the Emperor who have not been caught and imprisoned, The report from all parts of England are that the grain crops are backward, and in many districts thin and poor, and that vegetation is later than has been remembered for many years. The genial change in the weather has just set in, should it prove permanent, will soon, doubtless, repair much of the damage that has been done. Two Jews, the first ever sent there, are in the Quebec prison of St. Vincent de Paul. The officials were at a loss how to provide for their spiritual wants and, says the Montreal Gazette, “ to settle the matler they were given the choice of embracing the Protestant or Roman Catholic faith. After a little consideration they decided to attend the former chapel.” An elephant brought home by the Duke of Edinburgh accidentally killed her keeper en route to London, and now one brought home by the Prince of Wales and presented to the ‘ Zoo,” has stepped on an old attendant, who died in consequence. The animal sud- denly moved forward, probably because some one struck him or pall his: tail. He was quite gentle. “Ten dollars fine for driviag over this bridge faster than a walk.’”” ‘““What does that mean ?” asked alittle Indian- apolis boy, who was riding with his futher. Father explains : “If we whip up and go fast the policeman will stop us and take us to the mayor, and he will not let us go till we pay $10.” Silence in the carriage. Meditating boy speaks: “Papa! if it warn’t for po- licemen and for God what lots of fun we could have, couldn't we ?” A gentleman took his little boy to a model farm to see the wonders of the place. After they had been there a short time, the little fellow ran crying to his father, being at the same .time pursued by a big turkey cock, which was trying to geta piece of bread ont of his hand. “ What, my boy,” said the father, “‘ are you afraid of a turkey ? Why, you ato part of one yesterday !” “Yes, papa,’’ responded the little fel- low, wiping his eyes “ but this one isn't cooked.” 2 Liver is King. The liver is the imperi: organ of the whole human system, as it controls the life, haalth and happiness of man. VWicu it is disturbed in its proper action, ali kinds of ailments are the natural result. The di- gestion of food, the movements of the heart and hlood, the action of the brain and ner- vous system, are all immediately connected with the workings of the liver. It has been successfully proved that Green’s August Flower is unequalled in curing all persons — * afflicted with dyspepsia or liver complaint, and all the numerous symptoms that result from an unhealthy condition of the liver and stomach. Upon the medicinal virtues of Lime Juice and Quinine it is unnecessary to dilate. The combination of two agents of such universally acknowledged value, in at once a palatable and innocuous form, has been a disideratum long sought, but only now successfully accomplished ; for although the 7’onic qualities of Quinine have been popularised in the form of QUININE WINES, it is well known these combinations have been attended with serious evils conse- quent upon the Alcoholic Stimulants they all contain, 2% once prejudicial to health and de- moralising in their tendency. Constitutional Catarrh Remedy CURES CATARRH. Hear what « Reverend Gentleman says of the Constitutional Ren.edy. T. J. B. Harprye, -Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— | Dear Sin—Itis nowtwo years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to’ me to be “tod good to be true.” Pas, ; I was afflicted in my head for years before I ‘suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become. very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that‘ailment, and have not used ay since until of late I have taken somefor a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, — ts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, ~ . W.
