Ricaanp TwoeNe was summoned before the Stipendiary Magistrate this (Friday) forenoen,- charged with a breach of the License By-law —having sold lquer to aminor. In answer to the charge, the counsel who appeared in behalf of the defendant, produced an order which was given to the defendant by the father of the minor. The order was a general one. It set forth that tre minor’s father was unwell, and re uested the defendant te give the minor liquor whenever he went for it, as he (the minor’s father) was unable to write, and also unable to go for liquor—which-he was ordered by a physician touse. In [this ease the minor obtained liquor by virtue of the order and without the knowledge of his father. He drank part of it and treated his companions, who were minors also. ‘The court ruled that a ‘‘ general order,” such as the one giyen by the minor’s father, was not legal. The defendant was therefore fined five dollars for a breach of the License Law. _<o-m © - The ludia Budget shows a surplus of £119, 000 of 1879-50; and the estimate for 183! shows a surplus of $417,000.
