The firm will hereafter assume the title of Haley, Torn & Co. They have in connection with their store a large lobster and meat factory in course of construction which will be completed in a few days. This gives employment toa number of young men and girls, who would be obliged to seek work in the United States were it not for Messrs, Haley and Torn’s enterprising pluck Greene " ACCORDING to announcement, the Knights of Labor held s° special meeting at their Rooms last evening, the President in the chsir. Since the meeting had been called, however, he was glad te announce that the difficulty had been amicably arranged uently it was uot necessary to take the matter up. Mr. McLelan gave notice that he | would move his Pacific Railway resolutions |on Thursday nex’, } Hon. Mr. Pope moved the third reading | of the bill respecting the extension of the | lntercolonial Railway from a point at or near Stellarton to the town of Pictou After some discussion the House divided | and on a straight party division the amend- | jment was lost by 107 naysto 51 yeas. Majority against amendment, 56 The | bill was then read a third time, Mr. Pope moved the House into commit- tee on a resolution respecting subsidy to the Chignecto Maine Railway Company. This resolution, it will be remembered, in- creased the grant and shortened the time for construction. Mr. Mitchell questioned whether that scheme will be commercially remunerative. Mr. Davies thought that the time had come to cry “‘ hold” in expendi- tures of this character, and that the people ought to see whether the advantages com- mensurate with the expenditure of public money were forthcoming. Messrs. Hackett Wood of Westmoreland and Townsend spoke in favor of the resolution, Mr. Vail doubted if the traffic over the road would be equal to the estimate. After others had spoken the House went into committee and adopted the resolution. It was reported but not received, The order for the latter stands. BRITISH AFFAIRS ; i Lonvon, April 13. Gladstone stated in the House this after- noon that he would announce the terms of the proposed, Irish Land Purchase Bill on Friday. The majority of the Liberal and Radical polities! clabs of London have arranged to hold a great public meeting in St. James’ Hall, on the 2lst, to support Gladstone in his Irish pol- ity. Henry Labouchere will _ preside ; Joseph Arch and Charles Bradlaugh will address the meeting. Sir Wm. Vernon Harcourt, Chancellor of the Exchequer, resumed the debate on the Irish Bi'l in the House of Commons, He said, among other things, that Home Rule was inevita- ble. Mr. Goschen, who followed, said thst the Government was trying to terrorize Parliament into passing the Bill instead of attempting to pass it on its merits. Mr. Gladstone then spoke briefly in reply to the criticisms on the bill, and was loudly cheered by the Liberals and Parngllites. Upon the conelusion of Mr. Gladstone's remarks, a motion that leave be given to introduce the bill was put by the Speaker and agreed to without a division, amid prolonged and enthusiastic cheering. Mr. Gladstone stated that the second reading of the bill would be fixed for the 6th of May. The Frye Warming Up. WasuHINnetTon, April 13 When the fisheries resolution was placed before the Senate this afternoon Mr. Frye said that he desired to cail the attention of fishing vessels of the United States to the absolute necessity—if they would be safe and secure—of taking from the Collector of the port from which they sail a permit ‘‘ to touch and trade” at provincial ports. Mr. Morgan said that if President Cleve- land were informed that our right to buy bait and ice in Canadian ports was denied, he had nothing to do but to proclaim the suspension of all trade be- tween the two peoples until the question was settled. Mr. Frye’s resolution was brought to a vote and agreed to. Yeas, 35; nays, 10. The resolution declares it to be the sense of the Senate that Congress should not pro- vide for any joint commission to consider and settle the fisheries question. Interesting to Smugglers. Hauirax, April 13, Chief Justice McDonald to-day gave judgment in the Admiralty Court in the cases of the Queen vs. McDonald and the Queen vs. Goodwin. These cases arose out of certain smuggling of liquors, which were landed during the night on the coast of Argyle, Yarmouth County, NiS. Good- win, who isa truckman, was engaged to convey the goods to Pabnico, and was fined $300. MeDonald, being the owner of the schooner, was fined under different sections of the Act sums to the amount of $7,500. Nova Scotia Sugar Refinery. The Nova Scotia Sugar Refinery Share- holders met again to-day. Their final scheme to save the business for the original company was announced to have failed, only some $82,000 of the required $150,- 000 having been subscribed. This being the last day of grace given bythe Mer- chants Bank, those attending the meeting looked in accord with the collapse. It is expected that a new company will be organized to take hold of it.
