A deputation of Maritime Province mem- Sers waited on Sir John McDonald on Satur- day and applied te have the subsidy con- tinued for a fortnightly mail service between Halifax and Great Britain. No provision has been made in the estimates for the service, and should the application be unsuccessful it will be the first time in forty years that it has not been provided for. The amount appropriated last year was $19,600. Sir John was also reminded by the deputa- tion that the subsidy for the steamer George W, Shattuck which plies between Halifax and St. Pierre had been withdrawn. Sir John promised to lay these matters be- fore the Government. New York April 8. The steamer Bermuda from port Cabello, arrived badly injured by gales. On April 4th she spoke to the brig Fieetwingof P. E. Island from Cuba for Portland, under jury-masts— wanted no assistance. Sr. Joun, N. B., April 8. Col. Kay was to-day elected as Mayor by a majority of 333 over Karle. Cape Town, March 25, } via St. Vincent, April 8, § A convoy of supplies proceeding from Der- by in Lindina district, to Lunenburg on Pan- gola river, and escorted by 104 men of the 8th reximent, was attacked at daybreak on March 12th, on the banks of the Hombe river by 4,000 Zulus under Umbelime. Owing to previous alarm, the British were under arms, but were overwhelmed by the enor- mously superior force of the enemy. Capt. Moriarty and 40 men were killed and 20 men are missing. The fate of the wagon drivers is unknown. 150 men of the Eighth \egiment subsequently proceeded to the scene of the fight and recovered a quantity of rock- ets and ammunition, and buried the dead. 20 wagons containing supplies were lost. The relief column for Ekora will start on the 26th March. A party of volunteers visited the bat- tle-tield of Isodula and found that the Zulus had left 100 wagons there, but had removed the guns aud ammunition. Orrawa, April 9. Hon. Mr. Langevin has arrived in Town, accompanied by his private Secretary, and will leave on Friday by the Intercolonial Railway for Halifax, whence he sails by the Caspian on Saturday for England with refer- ence to the Letellier matter. Lonpon, April 9. At the disaster to the British convoy on the Intombe river, besides the troops, it is thought the forty wagon drivers and followers were killed. Twenty-five Zulu corpses were found on the field of battle, and it is believed that many more were drowned. Colonel Pearson signals from Ehowe that he ean hold out ten days longer, till 4th April ; that his provisions only are short and he has plenty of ammunition, The dispatch says nothing of sickness. France and England will first approach the Khedive in a firm but friendly manner and afford him an opportunity to retrieve his de- plorable blunder. Should he fail to avail bim- self thereof, the Porte will be seriously in- vited to take the matter into consideration. The Sultan will be amply justified in calling upon the Khedive to resign. Several young men belonging to the schools will deliver addresses, and the School scholars will conduct the singing. A prominent feature of the meeting will be the presentation by the Secretaries of the different classes, of the amounts collected during the year. Over 50 classes will be represented.
