The people cf Canada were unanimous on the question, and their sentiments wherever expressed the s+me, excepting of course at the meeting of the Grand Orange Lodge recently in Montreal. But there was no more significance ion a re- solution passed at s meeting of Orangemen agains: Home Rule than there would be in a Home Rule resolution passed by a Home Rule League. He believed, however, that ultimately Orangemen would see the same as their fellow countrymen, and work hand in hand with them, and when Home Rule had been gained, as it inevitably would be, the peopie of the north of Ireland would be as secure io their rights as the Protestant minor- ity of Quebec are in theirs. Although he did not believe the present an opportume time for bringing forward the resolution, Mr. Curran wonid sot go back on the principle of Home Reie, but would stand, as he had always stood, by the cause for which he hid fought since the movement wasinitiated. Mr. Curran proceecied so say that it was all very well to = resolutions of sympathy, but what reland wanted just now was money to meet the necessary and legitimate election expenses, and a five dollar bill would be more accept- able than a bushel of sympathy. He remind. ed those who heard him that the Archbishop of Toronto had consented to receive sub-« scriptions for the Irish cause, and he trusted that m terial aid would be forthcoming oe of the unfortunate discussien in the grit party, Mr. Curran said: Mr. Speaker, the great point in dispute and the great difficulty in regard to this matter, as it eccurs to the friends of the cause in America, is unfortunately the disunion which exists in the ranks of the Home Rule party themselves. We cannot shut our eyes to the fact, we would be recreant to oor duty, I should be re reant to mine, I feel, if, having an oppor- tunity of speaking on the floor of this Partia- ment to-day—if our resolution be worth any- thing, or if the words that we express are worth anything, if they are to be carried abroad—I should not emphasize my opiuion and the opinions of others who think with the people are to be rallied once more to the flag that we loveso well. We all kaoow that since last we had this question before the House, the great leader of the Irish people bas disappeare i from the scene. We all re- member what were the occurrences which took place shortly before his death. Speaking on the floor of this House on a former oceasioa, and when the great Irish leader was under the cloud of the accusations which had been brought against him by the London Times, I made bold to prophesy that he would avercome and vanquish ali his enemies, as he did.
