Pioneer Figure In Broadcasting Dies In New York NEW YORK. Oct. 1 - (AP) - Merlin H. Ayleswnrth. 86, a legend- ary figure in the early days of broadcasting and first president of the National Broadcasting Comp- any, died yesterday after a. long s illness. 1 A public relations executive at the time, Aylesworth was 40 years old when he was chosen in 1926 to launch NBC as the first major radlo network in the United tates. He had no previous experience in radio and did not even own a set. Two weeks after NBC was form- ally organized ior business, he put its premier broadcast on the air over 24 stations. That broadcast included Will Rogers, Mary Garden, Dr, Walter Damrosch conducting the New York Symphony Orchestra. Tito Ruifo oi the Metropolitan Opera, Edwin Franko Goldman and his band. Weber and Fields. Vincent Lopez and his orchestra and others. That first broadcast was typical of the scale on which Ayieuworth operated. He brought a pair or comedians. who were broadcasting over a Chicago station, to New, York for network broadcasts. They were Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden - Amos 'N' Andy. By the time Ayleswortn left NBC in 1936 to become pruldent and board chairman of R.adio-Keith- Orpheum Corp., network radio had Ilyeegotne firmly established in the Ayleaworth for the last several years operated his own office as advisory counsel and was on the executive board of Ellington and 00.. advertising agency. i In 1937.he became it member of the management of the Scrlpps- Hmvarv.-l newspapers, and was pub- lisher of tho New York World-Tel- egram from 1938 to 1940.
