The Dominion Government publishes from time to time the Census and Statistics Monthly, and the November issue gives the yield and values of potatoes, iieltl roots and fodder crops by Provinces. Among other things it allows the crop of potatoes in Prvincc Edward island to have been this year 7,333,400 bushels, or more than one tenth of the potato crop of tile eu- tlré Dominion. But it also quotes the value per bushel in Prince Edward Is- land at 25 cents per bushel, while in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick the value is set down at 42 cents and in thi- Dominion generally 48.7 cents. l-’rohnbly no one who knows will dispute that our potatoes art- the mst that are grown in Canada. Why thin are they worth 27 cents lc-ss than thc potatoes of Ontario, 31 cents less than tliuse of Quebec and 17 Ceflw las; than those of New Brunswick and Noya Scotia ? Yet such is the fact if the census Monthly is correct in its estimates. The reason is that for “lm of winger tranrspurtiition our flume” are fo--if-li to sell thfir pota- toes in the ii<..l r-ri ri gluttcll market for what they will fetch, while tht f'u:’l'neni of the rniiirilnrid run and do holdtheir potatoes till prices are hi_l{_hel`. It follows that if uc had the Tun- nel and could ship our potatoes wlien we chose they would be worth) as much per bushel as those of the I ro- vinces across the Straits. Out loss is therefore l’.` ccnts. por bushel. if reckon at Nova Scotia 1111005. Or dl cents per bushel if we compuro with Quebec prices. Rel-ironed at ii' ctnts on our this _\’elir`s crop of 7,3?.b/100 bushels, the loss is $1.245.'l33~ This would bo about $70 “ICU f0\' the 1°* 000 farmers engafwil lil PDU"-0 FU‘9""“ ing Put in other words, lf W0 had chu ruuuel, the potato cron of this year would be worth over $3.000-00% instead of $1,831,690, and the average farmer would have S-70 U10"3 m°f\¢Y- That is the way the difference fig- uren out on potatoes alone. Over a million two hundred tliouannil loss on P0W~V~W5 “lone in “ single year for want of the lo1`!lZ'P"0 mistd Tunnel. Take turnips and other roofs as an- other example. The island crop this year is officially set down at 3.110.100 bushels, valued at iii cents. New Brunswick turnips are valued at 30 ccnts. President Cipriano Castro, born in 1360, raised a revolution in 1899, drove out President Andrade and has since reiigned in his stead as a despot rather than as a constitutional Pre- sident. For that matter Andrade was little or no better than Castro. Hn fled from the storm that Castno created, carryini: with him the spells lie had stolen and has since lived in luxury in Europe.
