A VatvasLe Discovery.—A chemical substance which, by contact with the at- mosphere, clears vitiated air of all impure gases produced by respiration, and refurs nishes automaticaliy the requisite quantity of oxygen, to make a respirable air, has heen discovered by M. George S. Jaubert, and the discovery announced in the French Academy of Medicine. He was experimenting to renew air in adiving bell. His hypothesis was that 79 per cent. of the oxygen contained in respirable air rermmaina intact after 2l percent. of the oxygen has been consumed, and the same nitrogen, mixed with a new supply of oxygen, be~ comes respirable air when the carbonic acid acd the vapor produced by breathing are removed. This hypothesis he found to be correct, manufactured the chemical substance to clear the impure gaeses and supply the oxygen, and eo solved his pro- blem. He etates that sx or eight pounds of this substance will enablea man to live for 24 hours ina diving bell. «iif ill) wanis in toilet articles.
