The programme closed with the singing of "God Save he Ki-ng" in wlfich Santa Claus join- ed most heartily. The farmer desires a fowl which will n t only be suited to his purpose but` will also pay well. The breed which a farmer should keep will depend upon market requirements' and the ruling prices for eggs and poultry. Average prices for dressed poultry and eggs in Canada are good, and it will usually be found that those breeds which are good iles-h producers, in addition to being good iayers, are tho most proiitable. But there are vast differences among birds of the same breed; that is, there are good and poor ‘birds in the one breed One should aim- to get a good strain' of the breed chosen,a.s the breeding value of any strain is a very important fac- tor. ' THE BEST POULTRY o From the fanmer’s standpoint there are three' classes of chickens-the gen- eral utility class. the egg-laying class. and tho meat-producing class. Each lass is adapted for a special purpose. Taking into consideration the price' of live and dressed poultr'y;it will usually be found that breeds belonging to the eneral utility class are most profitable in the hands of the average farmer.- M. He found Conservatives, who some months ago were rather criti- cal of the Government. had fallen back into line' as soon us the Liberals be- gan to talk about forcing an appeal to . the country. In his opinion there will be a still greater change of sentiment in favour of the Government as soon as the writs are issued. and he is con- fident that from that time until elec- tion day~ the Opposition will suffer the loss day by day of Liberals who are not going to take the' chance of plac- ing the conduct of the war in the hands of Sir Wilfred )Laurier and his supporters, no matter what profes- sions they may make. Going into par- ticulars he said the Government would make gains in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskat- chewan and Alberta, but would lose in Quebec, with perhaps a slight loss in British Columbia. The majority in 0n‘- tario. he added would remain as it is. In that Province the Government had the same chance of winning half a dozen' seats from the' Liberals as the Liberals had of winning a similar num- ber from the Conservatives. On the whole his opinion is that. if the Gov- ernment were seeking for nothin'g appeal to the country at the very ilrst opportunity. a _ MAIUR l.W.
