BERRI IL ehcp CC Tt eR ati a NOVEMBER 1, 1898, Se NEW MAIL ARRANGEMENT. concinaeaie As a result of the protest of the busi- ness men of the Province, represented by the Charlottetown Board of Trade, the Steam Navigation Company have adopted anew arrangement under which, for al] practical purposes, we shall be as weil off, or almost 98 well off, in reepect to the mail service as during the summer eeason. The the Northumberland came away from Point du Chene before the mail arrived there was the difficulty and hazard of getting out of Shediac harbor after night- fall. So it has been arranged that all the mails ehall come on to Pictou, and that the steamer Princeas reason why shall leave there with them each midnight and arrive here sufficiently early every morning to have them despatched by the outgoing morning traine to all parts of the Province,—while the business men of the city will have their letters and papers to hand on going to their offices at 8 o’clock. Under this arrangement the people of outlying sec- tions, including Souris and Georgetown, Alberton and Tignish, will have their wails twenty-four hours sooner than unrer the fall arrangement which has been dis- carded. Ono advantages This is the great advantage gain- ed. the other hand, there will be and disadvantages. Passengers for Pictou, Halifax and other parts of Nova Scotia will leave here at nive o’clock iastead of at seven as hereto- fore. minor This advantage is counterbalanced by the fact that passengers from Nova Scotia must necessarily cross the Straits Passengers from the West will have the option of stopping over a St. John or Moncton and crossing in the Northumberland next evening, or proceed~ ing to P.ctou aod arriving here on the previous morning ; while passengers for the West will leave by early train and the Northumberland and will have the same despatch as heretofore. Uader the new arrangement, Captain McLean aud the officers nnd men of the Princess will, of course, have to change their o.der of liy-~ ing until navigation closes, and the gentle- men of the Post Office and some of those on duty at our hotels will be compelled to cut their morning slumbere short. But taken altogether, the new arrangement is to be commended ae affording, under the circumstances, “the greatest good for the greatest number,” and removing the dis- grace of allowing our mails in transit to be held up for twenty-one hours. in the night. +042 --er oe A CONSERATIVE GAIN. Ovr Liberal papers are loud in their boasts over the election of Hon J. M. Gib- sou, of the Ontario Government, in East Wellington. The Patriot draws tbere-~ from the conclusion that “the Tories are & discredited party.” Now what are the facts? East Wellington is and has been» ever since confederation,a Liberal con- stituency. Atthe last general election in Ontario there were three candidates in East Wellington, and yet the Liberal won by a mjority of 188, The present bye- election was a straight party fight between Dr. Coughlin, the Conserative candidate, and a member of the government which exerted all its influence and patron- age on his bebalf. The Government felt that if it lost East Wellington, its prestige would be completely gone. A great effort was, therefore, put forth to save the riding. The success of the Government under these circumstances does not, certainly, prove that the Tories in Ontario are “ a diecred- ited party.” In point of fact Dr. Coughlin, despite all the disadvantages under which he contested the district, polled 311 more TY EG ee 6 oven er a OUR New Blankets If there are blanket wants to fill it can’t be long post- poned. Advice For Our Fruit Grower's Association. The following letter from Mr. Wolver- ton, secretary of the Pioneer Fruit Grow. er’s Association of Canada, and that of On- tario, who is also editor of the Horticul- turist, to Rev. Father Burke, of Alberton, will be read with interest : Rev. A. E. Burke, Alberton. Dear Farner Burke,—I haveto thank you kiodly for favors received. I fully appreciate the valneto your province of P. E. 1. Fruit Grower’s Association, and am gladto find that the governmeni is taking an interest 1n the good work. I only regret that the amouot of your grant is so small. You certainly ought to have $500 per annum, at tbe very least, if the fruit growing interests of your country are of apy importance. { think the distribution of literature on fruitgrowing and the giving of lectures on horticultural subjects quite as important in the conduct of norticultural societies as the giving of premiums to professional prizewinuers; andi quite hope you will pot mike the mistake of spending your money in the way of giving premiums or prizes for fruits at exhibitions, If you knew the frauds that are conducted by those who simply buy up collections and go about from fair to fair for the sole purpore of carrying Off the prize money, you would see that it is best to entireiy avoid that danger and spend the amount of your grant and the fees from your members equally in the interests of every member. This system we are now cultivating in Ontario after many years’ experience with ihe prize busivess. I sha!] be glad to notice the work done by your society from time to time, if you will be kind enough to forward me notee, Yours very trnly H. We verron, The advice of such a veteran Fruit Grower’s associate is certainly wortby of the very best consideration, and no doubt it will receive such from our live young Island Association. a _~— — ee oo r' Lord Kisehener professes to be only a soldier and no diplomatist, but as has been weil remarked by the Mail and Empire, nothing could have been wiser or more diplomatic than bis conduct at Fashoda, and hie expressions on the situation during his trip through France.
