__ _-A SERIOUS LOSS- Mr. Mal-
colm McMaster. Sumnierside, casne
nearly losing his valuable more and
foal on Monday, in a pasture field at
the west oi' the town. The animals
were evidently searching for water
and ventured out too far on a swamp
or quagrnire and were unable to get
back, -they were found several hours
after by 'the owner who .easily re
moved\fhe foal. but the mare had
struggled so much that she was dow_n
in the'mud to a depth of more than
three feet. Dr. A. A. Black, V. S. was
summoned. who with other willing
hands and. aftw considerable diffi-
culty, finally succeeded in extricat-
lug the beast which was in so weak-
ened a condition, that it was found
necessary to haul her to a livery
barn in the town. The owner at first
gave the beast up as lost. but al-
though he values her at a consider-
able more than_$200. he entertains
very poor hopes of her recovery-H.
