' ‘ At this meeting, all the Protestant de- nominations, consistlng chiefly of Eplscopaliaus, Preabyterlans and Metho- dists, were represented, each being de- sirous of having a school. Neither con- gregation having ability to support one alone, it was the decided to unite and a Union School was accordingly cr- gnnlzed. Among those present at this meeting were the late Thomas and Mrs. Sims, the late John and Mrs. Glover, Miss Grace \Vebster, John Sharpe, G. W. Bentley, und others. As all felt the importance of having the work started at once, it was moved by Mrs. Sims that Mr. Bentley be Superintendent, which was unanimously carried. During the summer months, school conf tinued to be held in this same little build’ ing, until 1877, when, the Public Hall be- ing completed, it afforded a more spacious meeting-place for the growing needs. The school now continued for several years, attended by Presbyterians, Bap' tists and Methodists, until the Presby- terian church was completed, in 1885 when an agitation began for separation; but nothing definite took place until the spring of l8&, when the Presbyteriana withdrew, rnnninin snbbnrii ssnnci in their own church, and the remaining members were left to occupy the Hall. They, however did not remain there much longer, for in September, 188), when this church was opened, wh were glad to meet in the Vestry. Up to this time, Sabbath School had met only during the summer months, butvthc idea of keeping it open for winter also, had been discussed, and after a trial, which was very satisfactory, it has con- tinued tothe present time an evergreen school. ,, In 1897, after twenty-two years of active service, our first Superintendent was obliged toretirc, on account of ill- health. Mr. Proctor, who for years had _ been an earnest and faithful Bible-class teacher, was unanimously elected to iill that oiilce, ably pei-forming the duties of Superintendent, until advancing years compelled him to resign, regretted by all Sincethat,tlmeourpresentSuperintendent.
