Moorhead Lo- gste in the morning addressed the » The Central tiuardianlvengeance 0f God Ballet! tlpon By (Rev. Dr. It. Moorheod Lents) In an eloquent. forceful sermon, reminiscent of prophets of old Rev, Dr. H. Moozhead legato called for the Vengeance of God at the present critical time. Choosing his text. from Psalm XCIV., l-“O Lord God to whom vengeance belongeth. O God to whom vengeance be- longeth, show Thyself," Dr. Le- Bate said: What a. dreadful pray- er, someone says. Is it possible that a sincere Christian should cull down the vengeance of God upon anyone or anything? We are all praying these days. The church is on its knees intensively as the Dossloiiityt of new national rils disclose themselves. We are gging drtven to prayer. And, ws should seek to know what we are doing 111 the prayers w: are offering. Let. us be helped by examining the prayer that this man prays --“O Lord God to whom vengeance be- lvllsvth. O God to whom vengeance belcmgeth. show thyself." This prayer is supposed to have been prayed in circumstances very similar to our own. A powerful, resourceful, relentless enemy was swjeeping on i11 his victorious course. Smaller nations were smartlng and suffering under his oppression. religion itself was in danger of annihilation. And this man's sense o! the sovereignty of God leads him to cry out in appeal to the Judge of all the earth. Nothing, he feels. but the direct intervcntloll of God can meet. the case. Humanitys out- look. this man believes. is utterly black and impel-ass except for the c110 saving fact that God is all lifllverflll and all 111st. And so he fram:s his DHLYCI‘ using the word which tnav seem to many of us ex- trme "show thyself, Lord in all thv vengeance." That word "vengeance" is one. I know which jars upon the sensitive soul. The idea of appealing to God as a God of vtmgennce is, lo 1111111)". repellent. But we nerd to be stlre what the Dlvixt» Velvtrxinrc means We tend to confound the two words "vengeance" 11nd “revenzcfi They are really entirely different. Dr. Samuel Johnwvn makes the differ- cnee clear. "Revenge" he says. “is an net of ivassion: venzcancc is an art of justice." And that is the use this man makes of it in his prayer. He does not pray that God should lake vengeance on his enemies in the same wav hat men. inflamed with angst" and ltatrcd, take 1e- vcnrzc on their enemies: out he is attrihutinc to God the 111.211. hniv quaity of infinite and inflexible .111stice. And it is that thouzht of God alone that makes present, conclitiolts i11 the world tolerable for you and me -—tl1at God is a. Gad of vengeance, that, justice and judgment are the foundations of His Throne. If it were otherwise what, have we to hope for? If things are in the lmnds of men alone, if there is no Divine oversight, no control, no defined Plan. no ulti- mate goal the future does not bear contemplating.
