NATURE STUDY IN THE SCHOOLS.
For mary years it has been one of
my constant regrets that no school-
maser of mine had a knowledge of'
natural history, so tar atleast, as to
have taught me t`;ie grasses that grow
oy the wayside, and t'ie little winged
and Wingless neighbors that constantly
meet me with a salutaiion that I cannot
answer as things are. Why didn’|.

The~regret of Carlyle may stiil be
felt by those who pass through the
schools of this Province. In Carlyle’s
day little thought had been given to
the subject by the farmers of common
school “Courses of Study” since the
great, advances have been made
throughout the civilized world. The
educational authorities, the oountribe
of Europe. the States of the Union to
the south of us, and' of the Provinces
of the Dominion. with the exception
of this province. have made marked
advances in the direction of the
teaching of the natural sciences in the
public schools.
Why is not more attention being
given to this subject in our schools 2
We propounded this question to one
interested in educational matters in
this province, and received this re-
ply. “The teachers as a whole knew
y nothing about th`e'subjec`t,“ and ' no
adequate provision-is made in _Prince
.f Wales College, .where our teachers
the natural sciences.
Leaving the correctness of this
reply to be decided by the educational
authorities, we are forced to con-
,clude from the testimony of those who
‘ there is _need of much more attention
any argument in this the closing
years of the nineteenth century as to
the importance of a. knowledge of the
natural forces in operation around us
or to the intellectual value of such
studies, as well as the monetary value
arising from such knowledge.

pupils passing from our schools in the
future will not have occasion to re-

I It is surely unnecessary to advance
less enlightened as to the importance
of this knowledge. These suggestions
to create some interest in these mat-
ters, but a. still more potent influence
would be to stir up some measure of
enthusiasm among the teachers. “As
sy-the teacher so is the school,” is a
truth, and as is the attitude of the
teacher towards this subject so will be
the success or non-success of an ar.-
tempt to make a study of the natural
sciences more general in our schools.
If a more prominent place were
given these subjects in the require-
ments for teachers’ licenses, and
might we add an improved method of
teaching these subjects to students
preparing for teachers. There would
then be a class of teachers better
qualiiied for this work, But what
about those already teaching 'l Many
of those would gladly improve them-
selves if they saw that authorities
were interested in the matter. If
suflicient inducements were offered
there would not be any, question as
to the action of the teacher.
When this question confronted the
educational authorities of Nova Scotia
and New Brunswick they established
a Summer School which has during, - . ` '_ A . ' |
the past thirteen years touched the  ' 1 ' ' ' " ` _
centres of those provinces. = 3,
The same thing might be done here 0
if the barbarous -practice of spring
and autumn holidays were abolished
and midsummer holidays substituted,
and the leaders in education put their
heads together. What would be
better-because bringing into con-
tact with our teachers greater know-
ledge and experience than they them-
selves possess, would be an affiliation
with the Summer School of Science
already established. Another advan-
tage of this aliiliation, and one that
should not be without weight, is that
it would be cheaper both to the
Government and the individual
teacher than would be the establish-
ment of a ‘Summer School for the
province. _
