Douglas, who is at present stationed here, is ri mem- ber of the Town Council in his home town and was deeply interest- ed in the manner in which Council meetings were conducted in Can- ada in comparison with his own country. One thing that impressed the visitor was the prcmptness and dispawh with which the Summer- slde town council is able to deal with civic problems and admitted that in his home town that ‘he meeting often lasted until after midnight. He spoke of his visit to Canadian parliament sessions and said that they differed in no way from those in Australia. He visit- ed the U.S.A. on his way to Carl- ade. and told of the thrill he receiv- ed on landing at Vancouver and seeing the Union Jack fluttering in the breeze. It was like a home- coming and it was things like this that made one realize the vastness of the British Empire. He said that while Democracy is not working 100 percent in the British Dnpire it is up to the young generation to see that it was carried on and improved. Sgt. Douglas answered various questions regarding things of interest “down under" and re- ceived a hearty invitation from his worship to drop in at the council meetings in future whenever pos- slble-S A draft of naval ratings has left H.M.C.S. “Queen Charlotte" for training elsewhere in Canada, In- ciuded were: William A. Walter Jones expressed his op- inion yesterday of the Old Home Week and Provincial Exhibition program now in full swing in the course of a brief address to the overflow" crowd; nnd that is just what this year's program is shap- ing up to. Yesterday from early noon un- til late at night a colorful, holiday crowd swarmed through the big plant viewing the marry attrac- tions tliat ere to be witnessed. The show rings where judging was in full swing were crowded as in- terested spectators followed the judges activities as they went over minutely the cream of the Is- lauds horses, livestock and cattle.
