HASZARD'S GAZETTE. MARCH 12. They were determined that it should exist no longer ; and, at the general election, the people min,-ned a, mgjority to_ establish Ilesponsi le Government upon its ruins. Then, aflerwards, the gentlemen now.in ollice went back to their constituents, who in some insmnees,_retnrned then b a show of hands. ‘The time mi toome when t poo or might think that their repre- senmtives oou best serve their several consti- tuencies, and best further the general interests, 1, being free from the chains of ofice—by being gaggle-minded on every subject which might be bpoug before the Legislature. He had often dreamed on this matter; and ruminated on his dreams too ; but neither his dreams nor his cogitatious had proved to him that the time for the emancipation of all legislators from the bondage of ofieo was yet arrived. He would, however, ask with respect to. hon_orable member, Mr. Macaulay, if he himself, with all the eloquence which he had brought to on the ueation, was a free an independent He (Mr. Mooney) thou ht he would havetoconfsssthat hewas not. f hswei-ea fiiee and independent gentleman, he would not be where he then was; for ‘s constituents were amongst the number of the most notorious of determined obstructives; and, guided, as he was, by them, how could he move in any mea- sure of rcform—unIess, indeed, he should be courageous enough to throw of the yoke, and o pose their views. And, was it at the instiga- tiiin or su stion of a ntlemsn, diotated to and y such gap e as Mr. Ma.oaulay’s sup- porters, that the ouse was called u n to re- port of that system which it had been chosen to esmblishl Such a proposition as the hon. member-_’s, could not, be (Mr. Mooney) felt certain, have the smallest c cc of success in such a house. If the question of excluding cer- tain oilicials from the Legislature were to be brought forward, the only proper place to de- termine it would be the Hustings at the next neral election. If the present Government, owever, continued to act, as the were then doin and had been in the habit 0 doing, they coul not fail, and would haveno occasion to fear any adverse agitation. But from what quarter soever the present Government were assailed, they appedred to be impregnable : for, let them make a retrograde movement——let them show a disposition to fall back on the old ob- stiuotive system, and they were propped up b the minority ; and. when pro ess was their ob- ject, they were not in the am». lost danger of de- feat, sustained as, on such occasions, they al- wa s were, by s suficient body of staunch and indyependent members. The esent Govern- ment was so tpeculiarly adap to resist politi- at its safety was in no way en- dangered, let the wind blow m whatever quarter it might. It was indeed a strong Go- verninent--stronger than any other of which the North American Colonies could boast-— shongsr than any of which Great Britain her- self could boast : the rocks of Scilly were never more llrm ; and when it came to be weighed in the people’s scales, he hoped it would not be fun wanting. The question was then put on the hon. tnsnibsr’s motion; and the House divided- Yrus—Mr. Macaulay, Hon. Mr. Palmer, Mr. Yao, and Mr. Monigomeryrd. .N'uys-Honbls. r. Colss, Col. Treasurer. Col. Rnanis.-—We were shown, the other day, a very interesting curiosity, discovered on farm of Mr. Donald M‘Leod, sen., French River, New London, which, when examined, by a scientific Geol ‘st, may throw some light on the formation 0 this Island. The following extract of a letter is a description of it, and how it was on . “ When he had descended to the depth of 21 feet 9 inches—9 feet of which was solid rock- he discovered the ' wbone of an animal embed- ded in a solid roo , the piece which I examined was H inches in length, 3; inches wide at the small end, and 5 inches at the larger end. It contains ei ht teeth of a round form approach- ing to ova , and inclined hack; the teeth are item 1 to 2 inches in length, the part which con- tained the marrow, both in jaw and teeth, is completely petrified. From the formation of the teeth the animal evidentl subsisted on flesh, and bole to that class enominated carni- vorous. o person that s seen it ever saw a jawbone like it; and what the animal was I think will uule the no turnlist, but it is evident the class 0 animals to which ' god is not now to be found in any of the rovinces. It is my opinion that it was an in bimnt of the MD! We have heard that it is the intention of his Excellency to forward it to Britain to be examined ; we would su st, however, that it need not be sent sogfaer. We have gentlemen in the Colonies able to ive as sound and correct an o inion, as rega s its deposit e animal, as many that are in Britain. Mr. J. W. Dawson, the late Su r- intendent of Education in Nova Scotia, s spent much of his time in a uiring a practical knowledge of Geology andmhoo gy, and, we doubt not, his report on the sub’ t would be acknowledged b the first Geologists in Britain. He accom ni Sir Charles L ell in his tour through i. ova Scotia, and has the highest enoomiums passed upon him by that gentleman. TENANT MEETING. A Public Meetin was held at Murra Har- bour Road, on Frifiay the 4th inst.. or the purpose of forwarding a petition to the House of ssembly, respecting the present circum- stances of a large portion of the Tenantry on the Earl of Selkirk’s Estate in this section of the Island.
