ment of April 30th 1917. Private
Matheson was li good soldier. and l
can assure you that his loss ls- keenly
felt by all who knew him. Canada has

vices both at the church and grave.

Rev. John Gillis, was born at Lyn-
dale. Queen‘s Co., I’.E.l., March 20th
1839. When ll. young man he was
engaged in farming near St. I’eter’s.
where as his future testified, he un-
mlstakably heard the call of God' to
preach he gospel. After his college
work in Monmouth. lil., he entered
McCormack seminary, Chicago. and
spent a year in that institution. Be-
fore the seminary opened next year
Chicago was almost wiped out by its
terrible fire. So Mr. Gillis went to
New York City and finished his theo-
logical course in Union Seminary. lic
was ordained by New York Presby-
tery in 1873 and' sent by that Presby-
terg as a missionary to -the Seminole
indians in Indian territory. A year
later he returned to Prince Edward
Island in poor health, and for the will-
ier supplied thc Marshfield congrcga-
tion. I
The following year he went tn
Scotland and remained' nine years
ministering to the congregations in
the parishes first of Knock in Islv of
Lewis for a year and later Appin in
Ai'gylesI'ril‘e for eight years. He then
returned to (7=\nada and 'was ca-lied
to St. Andrew's Church, Eldon, Olil..
and later to St. Audrcw’s Church.
Paisley. Ollt. His next pastorate was
