It would seem that both Norths should have jumped to two notrump rather than three diamonds. It is true that a two 11 o t r u m p response ordinarily shows 13 to 15 high card points, but the advantage of identifying immediately a uotrump type of hand should outweigh the impor- tance of telling partner about the diamond support. At both tables a heart was led. The first declarer played low from dummy and won East’s ten with the jack. The king of dia- monds then forced West’s ace. triply stopped and that turther heart leads were futile. In an elitort to find declaner’s weakness, West shifted to a low club. He struck gold. The de- fense rattled oIflf four cluIb tricks and South went down one. At the second table declarer was more acutely conscious of the danger of a cluIb switch. He decided to disguise his heart strength. He also played a low heart firom dummy on the open- ing lead, but won East's ten with the king. He deliberately sacri- . ficed a heart trick in order to try to sell West the idea that East had the jack of hearts. When West now took the dia-_ mond return he led another low heart, confident his partner had the jack. The ruse haying suc- ceeded, declarer added insult to injury by playing low from drum- my and winning the heart with the jack. This d‘eclalrer made four W. We do not labor the point oi whether West should have fallen into the trap, but rather bestow our praise upon the second de clarer who called on deception to assht him making the con- tract.
