Despite the disagreeable weather and the rather dismal outlook of the fur industry, all were cheerful. Many of them had been engaged in silver fox form- ing for over thirty years and some of them for almost forty years. In that. time they had seen spectacu- lar prices realized and had also been in eras of almost as low prices as present. pone thing that. brightened the picture was the fact. that the world's production today is not much more than a tenth of what it. was in 1939. and the total pro- duction in Canada and the Unit- ed States is less than one-tenth. As Gcorgc Callbeck very sageiy remarked, given A bit of an up- turn in demand, silver fox can come back very very quickly. The worst body blow that the industry has' received -this year is an embargo on the importation of silver fox furs and other furs into France. Just why the French Gov- ernment did this we cannot un- derstand. as the French people were not great buyers of silver fox, it was the thousands of visit- ors from all parts of the world whose shopping place is Parts. The French designers are among the most. noted in the world and for many years they have featured silver fox, in fact they were among the best friends we had.
