to overflowing and niany were unable to
secure ailinittaiice. At Kensington, the
visiting Miiiisteis were asked to say a iew
words fi'o=.n the car platior_in to the wait-
ing ci'owd, and they were listened to with
deep interest. -At Charlottetown _thous-
an<ls"`we'i'e waitiiigfor them, many from
distant parts of the couiiti'_\' and before
the hour set for the meetings the two the-
aties were filled to the doors, many here
also being unable to get inside. And the
meetings themselves were diii`erent from
former pre-election cainpaign meetings.
The eai'nestiiess of- the speakers was i'e-
flected in their audiences. There was no
demagogue appeal such as usually elicits
the applause of the unthinking that ai'e to
lic found in all audiences. The speakers
stood on the high le\'el of nationhood and
patriotisiii; there were no base appeals to
the patronage hunter or the otlice seek-
er; there was nothing that the little parti-
zan oppositionist oi' the obstructionist
could take hold of; he stood cowed _ and
subdued before the things that were higher
and nobler than those which, at ordinai'y
political meetings, gave him_ his cue for
iiitei'ruptioii and obstruction. The meet-
ings both at the Prince Edward and the
I’eople’s Theatres, were, with _the excep-
iioii of the applause which frequently
punctuated the addresses, more like reli-
gious services than political gatherings.
Sii'“Robert’s manly, outspoken reference
to his efl`oi'ts to induce Sir Wilfrid .Laur-
icr to join a coalition government for the
better carrying on of Canada`s part in the
war; Hon. F. B. Cai'vell’s frank statement
that he lhad pleaded with his former lead-
cr and friend to adopt the only course that
could ensure Canada`s honorable participa-
tion in the war--the only course that meant
that Canada would stay in the war or quit
as Russia did-appealed with iri'esistible
conviction to the audience. There were
many Laurierites present at both meetings
and they felt the exceeding narrowness of
the sectional plank-on .which their leader
and the remnant of his party stood, a plaiii;
that separated Quebec from the English-
speaking provinces and which, if followed,
nieant that Quebec was to dictate the Wai'
policy of Canada, meant that Canad'a
would abandon the men she had sent to
the front and be forever disgraced. Many
who had come as Laurieriteswere heard
to say on leaving the hall that they were
convinced the Laurierite policy if followed
could end only in disgrace to Canada and
that thenceforward they were Unionist".
The position of the Union Government
was so clearly and fairly stated that no
thinking man or woman, unless political-
ly blinded, could fail to see that any other
ifoirrse than Union would be disastrous.
The fact that Sir Wilfrid Laurier had lost
thesupport of all his former coleagues ex-
cept those of Quebec is a stumbling block
over which his most zealous partizi ns
cannot climb without falling.

doctrine that Laurier expects to \viii the
jelectioii by. He will no doubt be ii leading
Jiigure in the'Laui'ier Cabinet if such a (_`ab-

the Toronto Saturday Night says:
