Seaman, of this City, has just sllb- mitted her annual report of the Victorian Order of Nurses of G‘ace Bay Branch for 1935 which com- pleted the fifth year since the V. O. N. began services in Glace Bay. During that period says Miss Seaman there have been many days of storms that have made it difficult to meet all the calls; but only when travel- ling has been impossible were visits omitted, even when it was neces- sary to walk long distances through deep snow to reach the paticn: There have been days of hard work and long hours and night calls. and day: of worry and anxiety. but days that have, at their completion, brought satisfaction for the perfor- mance of a worthwhile piece cf worl. Mothers attended at the time of their coni'i.nerments_ and they and their new-bom infant left comfort- able, the sick pneumonia patients left in the care of some competent member of the household. the bed- ridden chronic pa ents cared for and cheered, the litt e girls instruct- ed in the ground-w:rk of personal and home hygiene. During 1935 patients given care numbered 5,125. as follows: Medical 241 Surgical 196 Expectant mothers 277 Emergency obstetrical cases 45 New born infants 198 Mothers and infants dis- missed from hospital 904 General health instruction 151 Of these 1884 were English speaking Canadians; 91 French speaking Canadians; 102 British; 8 American; 12 Latins; 16 Scandin- avian; 5 Hebrews. There were 9 cases 01’ cancer carried; 1 typhoid; 1'1 pneumonia; 38 tubenculosis; 4 cholera infantum; 2:2 influenza. 182 women were attended at the “me of their confinement. Assist- ance was given at 20 minzr opera- tions. 190 night calls were answered, 141 well baby conferences were held with a total registration of 442 in- fants and pre-school children. 3 health league classes were organiz- ed and completed their courses sat- isfactorily, '13 students enrolled for these classes. 18,132 visits were made, these in- cluded 1064 to expectant mothers‘. 3.218 to mothers nnd new-vbom in- fants: 4.172 f:r supervision of mothers and infants through the 2nd. 3rd. 4th and 5th week of life; 21 to typhoid; 133 to pneumonia: 950 to tuberculosis. 239 to cancer: 340 to chronic cases; 3.182 for gen- eral nursing; 639 child welfare visits were made; 522 visits for general instruction. the greater number to patients attending Dr. Aoke1"s clinics.
