Carter, at St. Johns, Newfoundland, writes to the State Di- partnicnt that tli*city has an electric railway, which lm. reatcd ii good deal of interest, it being thc first in the Island. He says: “The current which provides the power, as well as that for lighting, is generated 9 miles from St. §John’s. The physicallcharacteristics of the region lend themselves admirably to the success of this enterprise. There is a chain of four connecting lakes, and from the outlet of the last runs a flume, which is bnilt along a steep hillside for 3,300 feet, until it disap- pears into a tunnel cut 320 feet through a blutl' of solid rock. At the tunnel is er- ected a huge sluice box of timber, to the bottom of which is fixed a steel tube 6 feet in diameter. Through this, the- water drops 185 feet on a large water wheel in the power house, which sets the machin- ery in motion. Had Piles _ For 9 Years Inspector of Steamboat: sured by nr. 0l\eso'a ointment. lemlnlon False modesty and fear of the sur- geon's knife prevent most people from appealing to their physicians for a cure for piles. Many people su£er on year after year, robbed of their rest and sleep by the terrible itching, when they could be entirely cured by a. single box of Dr. Chase’s Ointment. Mr. O. P. St. John, Dominion inspec- tor of steamboats, living at 246 Shaw street, Toronto, states:-“ I suffered for nine years from itching piles, at times being unable to iest on account of the annoyance caused by them. After trying almost all remedies in vain I oegziri the use of Dr. Chases Ointment, which entirely cured ine. I cannot speak too highly of it. I have recommended it to several friends, all of whom have been cured by its use.” Dr. Ch.'1se's Ointment is recognized by physicians, druggists. and the nub- iic in general as the only absolute cure for piles; 60 cents a box, at all dealers, or Edrnanson, Bates and Co., Toronto. ’ I ` ~_ _.\ ~ l» ", _(__, _» i '~°.~’f.»_. 1.‘»_ -- It =>_='.; - .fry yd' . _J ._ ‘_,:4, . . This he explained, would be a sign of God"s' displeasure at their sinful ways and of their miserly gifts to the church and the poor, and in caseiiberal donations were not made to appease Gods wrath awful things would happen. He furnished n member of each family with a darkfned glass, with instructions how to use it, ani wained them in case the spot- appear- ed tolose no time in getting to chuircli and to come prepared to make liberal gifts and to pray. The game, it is said, worked like a charm, and as soon as the spot on the sun was observed the neg-roes hastened to church with whatever small change they had, which was turned over tothe strange negro. Shortly aft-er the eclipse the negro left on his errand to dis- tribute the gifts to the needy and has not been seen since in that section.
