CHAPTER XII AT THE PRIX DE DRAGUES Great race meetings are fashionable in Paris, as they reason that racing in France is conducted on the dimocratic prin- ciples consistent with the French national motto of Liberty, Equal- ity and Fraternity. For the price of a few shillings anybody can buy admission to the most e::pen- sive enclosure, and rub shoulders with anybody else who may hap- pen to be there. "Ascot, with its Royal Enclosure. and similar courses with reserves for the privileged few. contrive to present horse racing as an amuse- ment of fashionable people. Un- fashionable: are also permitted to participate. within well-defined bounds. But those bounds are studiously observed; and British racing never loses its head, as the sport does in Paris. But. if there is any race meeting in Paris which may be described as fashionable, it is certainly the racing day on which the Prix de Dragues is decided at Auteull; the Friday before the Grand Prlx de Paris; one feature of the occasion is the procession of four horsed coaches. which gives the meeting its title; though one-half of the drags are driven and occupied by Americans and other foreigners in the country. . Nevertheless, the smartest peo- pie and the newest fashions may always be seen at Auteuil on the day of the Prix de Dragues. A Eri- day, after all, is not like a Sunday: when every wealthy shopkeeper can don a silk hat. and Jostle his betters and his inferiors about the totalisator booths. Though falling far short of Ascot, the Prlx de Dragties furnishes the best imita- tion of Ascot that Paris is able to provide. Miss Deborah soanes, some of the chalky dust of Paris from her sleeve, expressed her opinion of the polyglot chattering throng in unmeasured terms.
