Saas dae al ear Bl} le. this port THE D.iTLY CAPE BRETTON. —e Another Schem? for Davelopmant The New York Tribune of the 11th inst announces that plans are being perfec t-d for the construction of a short railway in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the ccm- pleion of which it is eacd, will make poes | sible a eaving of 48 hours in the time res | quired for bringing mail from Europe to The line is to be built by the Cape Breton Railway Extension Co., Limited, which was incorporated under a special act of the Nova Scotia Legislature, passed March 30th, 1899, and was organ- ized for business on September Sth. A number of New York capitalists are pro- moting it. Louisburg, on the east coast of Cape Breton Island, 2,240 nautical miles from Liverpool, bas an excellent harbor, never ice bound, with a pier having depth enovgh alorg side for admitting the largest vessels at low water. Itis proposed by the come pany just organized to build a railway from this port, which may be made the western terminus of a line of fast mail from Britich steemships tu Hawkesbury,on the Straits of Canso, a distance of 86 miles. From Hawkesbury ex'sting railways would carry the intercolonial mails to all parts of the Dominion of Canada and the United Statea, the lines on this side of the border ty which the mail would reach New York city being controlled by or in close relations with the Vanderbilt roads. The new road is to be constructed and operated in two sections, the railway sec~ tion and the bridge or ferry section over the Straits of Cameo. The company las a capital of $1,000,000, and is authorized to bond its line to the exten: of $15,000 a mile. Reciprocal Sympathy Lonpon, Oct. 4.—Mr. Henry Asquith, former Home Secretary, speaking at New~ burgh this evening on the Transvasl sit- uation, and referring to the at:itude abroad said :— The Americars have not forgotten, and I believe they will not forget, the attitude which this country, almo:t alone among the nations, assumed towards them recent- ly, when they were enduring times ot crisis and emergency similar to these, which seem before us. The sympathy, shown in those hours of danger and need engendered a warmth ¢f gratitude, and, I might also say, tenderness of sentiment, which is no less genuine and strong be- tween the nations than between individuals Look back two years; there is nothiag which we have more reacon to cCon- gratulate ourselves upon, nothing that has added more to our international asscts, than the fact that we established this tie of affectionate reciprocal sympathy with our great kindred nation beyond the At. | lintic. _ Uc OO Sometimes it seems toa weary woman that she must certainly give up.
