TheScien- title American gives cuts of these mach- ines. In one illustration we are shown a 50 horse power traction engine, with driving wheels 60 inches in diameter, drawing over the fields sixteen 10-inch plows, four 6 foot harrows and a seed drill behind this, atone operation plowing, harrowing and seeding from 45 to 75 acresa day. In harvest time by an equally powerful steam harvester, whose cutters are 26 feet wide, the wheat is “hear-led,” thrashed, cleaned and: sacked, the machine in one day gathering the crop of '75 acres. The scarcity of labor makes it profitable to employ steam power in this way. The loss of life in the United States last year by lightning was 562, with 320 Others injured, a. total of 1,382 casualties in a. pop- ulation of about 78 million. Thus one per- n son in 56,500 was struck by lightning, and one in 138,800 was killed. It is said that these figures represent the highest num- ber injuredby lightning in any one year. Of those killed 45 per cent were in the open air, 31 per cent in houses, 11 per cent under trees and 9 per cent in barns.Fuliy a dozen persons were killed while in the act of stripping clothes from wire clothes p lines. W -____ Miss Darchy, journalist and lecturer _ from Sydney, New South Wales, is now I in Montreal. She is not enthusiastic over ` woman suffrage, which has been tried in » New Zealand and West Australia but not i in New South Wales. She says: “From what I can see the women are quite indifferent. VVhen a woman wants A a thing she will get it; but they do not ex- press any desire for the ballot. I do not think, therefore, that it really makes much difference whether they have it or not.” The Khedive of Egypt is meeting with. a very cordial reception in England and appears to be enjoying himself to the full. In the earlier years of his reign he was less friendly, but appears now to have reached the sound conclusion that Great Britain is his best friend. When he came to the throne he was but 18 years of age and he is now 26. He receives $500,000a year for the support of the Khedival dig- nity. In New South Wales they impose a tax of $500 on each Chinese coming to the country and the Colony is not troubled with the Orientals. , nnuuenlsnussr ummer Footwear, We have just opened a. lo of Summer Footwear Ladies’ Bicycle Boot Men’s Bicycle Boots in leather and canvas, Men’s Canvgsp Shoes, B.>y's Bicydeiloots in canvas *Heil and Boys’ Outing mnmsnihuhhronase f§l'§=¢1_i ,' . ._.». , V _ _ ¢&\ "‘ :J -._ .I 1. _..-1 -3,' -ii-"L-` J5a."’,’_"e1'~i stent-_so f¢_e_¢_,tyf192f¢€e._ '- fal»o.omjrtu¢j~i»a- "reissued, _ rwefrfr f»°*v°°a_wri_¢e‘.12rle»»r». on Mai » `Aleo DR. arsnsorr corermns- sous .
