As soon as we landed the chief engineer with one boat and the first mate with avother pulied back to the skip ‘o try to carry off the papers and valuable docu- Or Sunday, at about noon, the fog set in snd nutil we struck Big Fish Shoal, off Simbro Island, about 15 miles from Hali- fax, the automatic fog whistle kept tooting [i.e swell meanwhile con.inaed and meny were sick. But at 6.30 on Monday even- ng, probably two-thirds of the passengers were on deck or in the dining room. I bad been im ray bunk all dav, but whea the bell rang for dioner came upto the deck. The firat mate and the crew vere then taking sour dings and reported 52 fathome of wat- er and a roeky bdotiom. The soundings taken a few minutes previous indicated 76 fathoms. The fog was sothick that our horizon was circumacribed by a live die- tant from us not more than 20@ yerds. The captain ordered a third sounding te be taken and one of the crew was daubing the buit of the sinker with white lead when a crash was felt that quicker than the captsin’s command brought all hands on deck. The boat slid forward a jittle aod struck again with greater v.olence than be~ fore and then atood atill. The engineer came on deck with the word that aeharp poinied rock had perforated tne belly of the ship and that the water bad ex- tinguished the fires before the distress whistlecould be sounded. Tbe order was instantly given to lower the boats, and passengers as well as crew lent themselves lo this task with an energy which was only equalled by the orderliness of it all. The biggest boat was dropped firat aud it bobbed up aod dewam inthe water some 15 feet frem the deck. There was liule weuder thet some of the ladies preferred to re- main on board the ship to trusting them- eelven in the tiny boat. Willy-nilly they were put on board. It is worth mentioning, perhaps, that I did not hear ascream. Those who were not agile enough to slide down a rope, had one put} sround their waists acd were so more securely than gracefully placed in the boat.' T hose of the passengers who were in their berths did noi take time to dress themselves but rao on deck +sthey were. The over- coats of the gentlemen and the shawls of the ladies whowereon deck came into service, One gentleman came up with his slippers On his feet and bie boots in his hand and went shares with alady woo was io her bare feet. Three Roman Catholic priests stood onthe deck calmly waiting till their turn came, and wiih a catholicity which was truly admirable administered an abeolvo to ali indiscriminately. The boat in which the ladies were em- | barked was lefttied tothe side of the ves eel. Into this, when tue other four boats had got loaded andthe passengers were ail off the ship, the larger part of thecrew jumped. The Captain and Firat Engineer were the lastto leave the ship and took their places in a little wherry with the pilot who bad taken the sbip through Hell Gste and was todoa like task for the Red Cross Steamship Silvia which we were to have crossed at Halifax. Even then, when ali the boats were standing about 50 yards from the esbip, the capiaio re turned and made a basiy investigation to see if it might not bs best afier ail to atay on the ship. The chief engineer also went aboard to make sure that nc neof the pas. sengers were still there. It did not take long to convince the captain that ibe ship was sinking. All the boats then put for the shore. Qur boat soon fel] bebind; for it was the smallest, had only one pair! of oars, Ooly one seaman and none of the crew. The waves came over the sides and one man kepi bailing all thetime most of us got wet. I got soaked from the middle dewn. Soon the shore hove in szht, bu:, seeing that it was rocky aod encircled with breakers, did not briog much comfort. We kept out from itand rowed along. Soor breakers loomed up in front of us as wel). We steered for theangle and there, guided by some fishermen, who beard the shouts of the foremost, foun calm water and a good landing place ata fishing stage. We were now on Sambro Island and got gener- ous and very welcome accomodation in two smal! houses which were on it. Those ) ofus who made our way in the derk, through a swamp strewcd with jagged boulders aud intersected with asetream. founda cheery fire and a gcod eubstantial meal at the house of Mrs. Gilkie, the light house keeper’s wife. The Captain, meanwhile, rowed the top of the meat in shore and across to Sambro, on tbe maioland, and telegrapbed to Halifax for tugs to carry the pa senger+to the city. The tug had by this time completely raised, and despite a chilly breeze the night was pleasant. At about davlight the tugs ar~ rived, and at 4a m on Tuesday we were in Halifax p. A.W. THROW IT OUT. —_— —- + The Senate cannot do better than to stand up, at al! bezards, in defeace of the consti(utional prinviple of repre-entation by population. The whole structure of Canada’s F:deral institutions rests upon the theery that the people are to be represented in proportion to their members in the Deminioa Parlia- ment. The decennial census, the right of every province to secure representation by pope lation according to the siandard guarante- ed to Quebec—all these provisions con- template representation by population. When the Liberals ap; lied the princiyle of One wan Ove vole to Oaiario, they ce prived themsrlves of the last vestige ot an excuse for the non-enforcement of the principle of representat‘on by p-pula ion. The Senate sbould not hesitate to stand by the principle which the Leu i-r Gov- eroment bas assailed, and throw out a measure which ia infinitely more danger- ous than the ancient iniquity woich it pre- tends to cure.— Toronto Telegram.
