The fact that the Conservatives have behind them a record of promise-keeping, while the Liberal record is nothing but one of brokerupledgfiafi what nialtcs the Government's campaign s0 C111- ficult to put over. flake, for example, the leadin Liberal pledge in 1935—thc one that got Mr. ones and 111311)’ oi his colleagues into the Legislature for the first time. lt was to practice the most rigid economy and to balance the budget annually. The result- was the biggest record of debt in the Whole 1115- tory of the Province. Mr. Jones, M1". I"Ittg1195. Mr. W. l". S. Stewart, Mr, Barbour—all mem- bcrs 0f the present Governmerif—at various tinics admitted that their pledges had 119811 v10- latetl, that. the finances were going from bad 1° worse. Some of them even predicted brankruptcy. They were not then, of course, in the seats of the mighty; they had not tasted any of the plums of office and were more or less out in the cold. S0 they formed a coteric of their own, a sort or unofficial (and quite ineffective) opposition in that famous all-Liberal House of 1935-39. But i: was highly significant that after 1938 their criticisms abruptly ceased. They talked no m0r€ about the Government’; neglect of its election pledges. As the next election drew near, they showed more and more willingness to play the Party game-Jess and less desire to shine as champions of the taxpayers. They got them- selves renominzitcrl a5 Campbell Government stip- porters. and took the field in that capacity as brazenly as the rcst. This time they had a new election slogan. No more talk about economy 01' budget balancing. The big Liberal policy of 1939 wa: to be Farm Rehabilitation! All our farmers know what happened. Hi;- tory repeated itself and Liberal promises, Once more successful in fooling the voters, were Iproitiptly shelved after the election. It is amusing, iu view of the assurances now being given by Premier Jones and his colleagues, t0 recall that in the 1939 Cantpaign Farm Rehabilitation was allegedly evenrthen under way-“The Conserva- tives nccdn’! promise it; we are already doing it", etc., etc. A "preliminary investigation,” we W919 10111. had been made; and it was for the purpose of getting a mandate to “launch the scheme without loss of time" that the election had been called so suddenly! These two recent experiences in Liberal prom- ise-breaking are still fresh in mind, That is why the Jones Government claims to b; not the “old gang" but something new and more trust- worthy. But how can that be when they were all in the same boat? They all subscribed to the satire pledges and were equally responsible for breaking them. Add to this the fact that the discredited MacKenzie King Government still pulls thc-sfrings-still dictates party policy, even t.) the extent of imposing a snap election on the Province at this iuopportime time, and it is not hard to explain why the electors are saying with increasing unanimity: “tr 1s TIME I-‘QR A citnxoiz!" i- EDITQRIAL NUTES .-s Kent's tliugland) harvest this year is the big- gest in 7o years. i1 l l The Second Front has opened; now is the need greater than ever for reinforcements. 101 U Edvard Hagcrup Grieg, Norwegian composer and pianist, died this date, 1907; his most pop- ular work is the Peer Gym Suite, 1% 111 101 101 The 1311117119 Day of Prayer was observed yes- ‘(give which was to finish fn Tun- a terday; tomorrow all Canada will be on it,- knees, or at lcast those who take religion seriously will. 101 1l1 l 1l1 T119 111911911 Third Republic began this date, 1870; after the disaster of Sedan, which ended the Second Empire, the Ministers, Jules Favre, Gambctta and Iroucher formally proclaimed the new republic, which still nominally exists. s a- w 4r T119 1011s arm of coincidence.
