claims that the Chinese in America “are
as much against the Boxers in China as
are the Americans or Europeans." He
savs moreover that many. of his fellow-
countrymen have become Christians, and
these and others would be glad to become
citizens if the laws would permit, which"
they do not. - .
In this letter there is an obvious under-
tone of fear of mob violence, such as on
the other side the American authorities
have apparently anticipated. The appar-
ently simple minded and silent Chinese
who walk our streets in seeming blissful
unconsciousness of all .save their daily
work,are still, by some mysterious means
aware of what is going on in China. as
well as of the new danger which confronts
them here in consequence. It is most
sincerely to be hoped that no acts of mob
violence or hoodlum 'lawlessness against
the Chinese in America may take place.
Such a thing would be a disgrace to our
religion and civilization alike, and would
go so far to make us appear on a par with
those in China who are insulting and m\i.r-
deriug those whom they call “foreign
devils" there. It should be regarded as a
test of our civilization and manhood in
the present crisis to treat the Chinese in
our midst with justice, humanity and
kindness.
